The Hidden Heart by Lindsay McKenna

Novella: Cara Montero had been kidnapped and then rescued by her sister Ali and Ram Torres. Now free but traumatized, knowing she was going to become a sex slave sold to someone in Asia, she wrestles with PTSD symptoms. When Ram and Ali have to leave, she feels as if she's been abandoned, relying heavily on them.

Tyler Hutton, ex-SEAL, is assigned to take over and be there as a bodyguard and support for struggling Cara. He's destroyed his marriage two years earlier because of his own PTSD and doesn't expect to be powerfully drawn into desiring more than a professional relationship with Cara. He considers himself broken, just as Cara sees herself as shattered. Can two people who are drawn to one another find a pathway to connect their hearts and openly admit they are falling in love? Or will the dark past overwhelm the fragile, hidden hearts that yearned for a lifetime together?

Although this can be a standalone story, The Hidden Heart is part of the Delos Series and wraps up a story arc involving different couples. For me, it is always enjoyable to read about characters I’ve “met” in past books and this story brings it all together for me. Cara Montero is a “civilian” but she had been kidnapped in previous stories. In The Hidden Heart, she is dealing with the aftermath of her own road to recovery while being guarded by her own Personal Security Detail employee (of the Delos group), Tyler Hutton. Both Cara and Tyler have things to work out, in their pasts, and while Tyler is helping Cara come to terms with her kidnapping nightmare and ordeal, SHE is helping him move past hurts and what he considers failures from his life before he left the armed forces. Very touching, heartfelt, loving story that will rivet you until the end. I also loved Cara’s parents who are real and true. And Cara’s kindergarten class will make you smile. Love this series, loved this story, and Ms. McKenna has created a world (Delos) that I will absolutely follow, wherever it takes us!
