Overview

Highland Master by Amanda Scott

When eighteen-year-old Lady Catriona Mackintosh discovers a wounded man in the forest near her Highland home, little does she know that he has sworn a sacred oath to kill her father and other members of the powerful Highland confederation known as Clan Chattan. Nor does she realize that she has met her soul mate. Independent, competent, intelligent, fiercely proud of her heritage, determined always to live near her own family, and known to her family as the "wee wildcat" because of her quick temper, Catriona is the daughter of a Highland chieftain and granddaughter of the even more powerful Chief (or Captain) of Clan Chattan. But her life changes forever when she persuades Sir Finlagh Cameron to return with her to her home to recover from his wounds.

Sir Finlagh "Fin" Cameron is on a mission for the heir to Scotland's throne, who has sent him to the Highlands to persuade the Chief of Clan Chattan to arrange a secret meeting for him with two other great lords (the Lord of the Isles and the Lord of the North). Until Fin meets Catriona, however, he has no idea that her father was the Clan Chattan war leader who led them in the battle that wiped out many of Clan Cameron's best warriors, including Fin's own father. The sole survivor of that battle, Fin accepted a bequest of vengeance from his dying father, providing him with a dilemma to face as he begins to fall in love with Catriona. He is not the only one enticed by her charms, either. There are two other contenders, one of whom is his own master, the heir to Scotland's throne. With royal mischief afoot, if Catriona and Fin are ever to find happiness, they must first avoid disaster that could change Scotland's history, and find ways to be open and honest with each other.

In 1401 Scotland, Lady Catriona Mackintosh accompanied by her dog is hunting. Instead of game, she finds wounded Fin of the Battles. She takes the injured warrior home while assuming her odious neighbor Rory Comyn attacked Fin. Catriona has her own issues with Rory who demands she marry him or else. Her grandfather Chief of Clan Chattan realizes Fin is the sworn man of the wild Prince Rothesay. Comyn prefers Rothesay's rival, sneaky Prince Albany, as he can gain favors with someone who is devious like he is. However, they have a history as her father led their clan in a slaughter of his clan including the death of his father. Loyalty by him to his prince and his late father, and by her to her family forces Fin and Catriona to undergo a deadly mission. This is a strong medieval Scottish romance as Fin and Catriona in order to survive their quest must work as a supporting team, which they do. Fast-paced, the couple is dynamic in achieving their objective, their fierceness to protect the other, and their deep love. Amanda Scott proves once again she is the Highland Master when it comes to a thrilling tale starring Scottish Knights (see Tempted by a Warrior); in this case star-crossed lovers whose historical ties are a battle where blood flowed. Very confusing.... gave up and did not get very far into the book. Not what I expected from Mrs. Scott. Disapointed....

I read Scottish Historical books to learn more about Scottish history in a readable format. This one interests me but I got very confused with all the odd words thrown in that weren't covered in the front 2 pages of the book. I feel you either do or don't use the language of the times, not both. Also a family tree for the Stewarts and/or the clans involved would have been helpful. The e-version map in the front didn't help either. I'm moving on to something I can follow better and may come back later to find out what happens.

This was a fairly good scottish story. Her writing is excellent, but the story was not one that has stuck with me. Worth reading and time well spent tho.

It wasn't the best book I red. The romance could have been better. It was slowly and just ok, a little boring. I didn't like when she used to call him sir. It was too formal for a couple. I hope the next one will be better.
