Gr 7-12-- A detailed, complex look at a major religion. Wangu explains that Hinduism emphasizes ethical and moral behavior and the development of inner harmony and peace as the purpose of life. She shows how beliefs and traditions such as reincarnation and the caste system are tied into the goal of achieving oneness with Brahma. She discusses historical origins, gods, scriptures, religious epics, etc., and demonstrates how Indian culture and Hinduism are closely intertwined. The volume closes with a brief discussion of the increased American interest in this religion's philosophy and meditative techniques. Black-and-white photographs and drawings with excellent captions accompany the well-written analysis. However, the commentary regarding all of the various gods and beliefs requires close, careful reading. While this is a good choice for advanced students seeking an in-depth approach, beginners would do better with I. G. Edmond's Hinduism (Watts, 1979; o.p.) or Patricia Bahree's The Hindu World (Silver Burdett, 1983; o.p.). A list of adult books for further reading is included. --Jane Gardner Connor, formerly at South Carolina State Library, Columbia
