The first edition of this book was published in 1883, and consisted largely of readings furnished by various parties, which were only edited, as the writer was not responsible for their arrangement. The unexpected loss of the old plates furnished an opportunity for the revision of the whole book. In the present form it has been entirely rearranged and enlarged.
