Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
Despite the beautiful photographs of hot rod cars, this is a twenty-four page children's book of limited interest to young readers. The text is written simply, in four or five lines, simple sentences and onomatopoetic exclamations. The photographs are in full page color across from the informational material. The four chapters address the definition of the type, the history of the hot rod, and traits that define the car such as its paint scheme and signature exhaust rumble. New readers who also love to look at cars may be interested in these picture books. A note to parents and teachers suggests the book's value in helping develop vocabulary and reading skills but sophisticated photographs rather than simpler illustrations may not attract the young general readers. There is a glossary, index, and resource page to help youngsters learn about these elements of a nonfiction text. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
