How to Babysit a Grandpa by Jean Reagan, Lee Wildish

A New York Times bestselling HOW TO picture book that celebrates the connection between grandpas and grandchildren!

A New York Times bestselling picture book--from the creators of the hilarious HOW TO... series--about a child spending time with his grandpa. Written in a how-to style, the narrator gives important tips for "babysitting" a grandpa, including what to eat for snack (anything dipped in ketchup, ice cream topped with cookies, cookies topped with ice cream) what to do on a walk (find lizards and dandelion puffs, be on the lookout for puddles and sprinklers), and how to play with a grandpa (build a pirate cave, put on a scary play).

Filled with humor, energy, and warmth, this is a great gift for or from a grandparent, and perfect for lap reading when Grandpa comes to visit!

Praise for the HOW TO . . . series:

“A silly take on role reversal.” –Kirkus Reviews (How to Babysit a Grandma)

“Laugh-out-loud funny. . .” –Kirkus Reviews (How to Raise a Mom)

“. . . laugh-out-loud scenes and funny hidden details.” –Kirkus Reviews (How to Babysit a Grandpa)

“Touches of humor in each of the digitally rendered illustrations.” –Kirkus Reviews (How to Surprise a Dad)

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, May 2012:
"The narrative is particularly effective in converting childish concern into caretaker reassurance ('When your mom and dad leave, pat your grandpa’s hand and say, "Don’t worry. They always come back" ’)...While grandpas will obviously enjoy sharing this story with their little ones (and parents will enjoy purchasing it for a Father’s Day gift for said grandpa), there is enough playfulness here to broaden the appeal to a wider audience."

This book is adorable! A fun, clever, cute idea to turn the table and let the little one think he is babysitting.

It’s a sweet story with a young boy babysitting his grandpa, or so he thinks as his parents go out one evening. His grandpa and he have a great time together playing and he realizes that his grandpa is older so he is gentle with him. Before long, the two of them are building caves together and fighting off sharks. I had mixed feelings about the nap section, as grandpa fell asleep and the boy was wide awake (it was cute how the author wrote it up but safety wise, I wasn’t sure this was the best thing as the boy was wide awake and grandpa was napping). You could tell that grandpa and the boy had a loving, caring relationship as you read the text and looked at the illustrations. The use of a variety of text fonts was excellent and I enjoyed their afternoon together. I loved the illustrations as they were sharp, bold and colorful and they helped to tell the story. 4.5 stars

It was like the author watched my niece and nephew as they spent time with their grandfather and then wrote a book about it.

My father and my daughter read this book together at least once a week, it has replaced all of their Berenstain Bears or Dr Seuss books as favorite book.
