One of my favorite things about this book is the title, I AM MRS. JESSE JAMES, because for most of Zee’s married life, saying those words aloud could mean death for her husband who was constantly in hiding, which also meant she lived a life of great sacrifice to protect the man she loved. It’s a poignant point in the story when Zee finally, and proudly, announces her true identity. The story of Jesse James through his wife’s perspective reveals a man who is much more than an outlaw. I enjoy seeing their relationship and family through this lens and learning how conflicted Missouri was in the aftermath of the Civil War. The author’s notes at the end show her commitment to the research behind the book. Historical fiction fans will love this book.
I can’t believe this is the authors first novel. I enjoyed every minute.
