Sorry to have a negative review of this book. As a former jarhead I am always looking for in depth or first person accounts of great moments or great men in the Corps. The title of this book caught my eye and not knowing who "Lucky Cates" was I skimmed the first few pages and grabbed it from the shelf (I did not buy it online). While it does go into Commandant Cates' early career in the Corps I would deem this less of a story about him then a general overview of the action that took place while he was in France. It did follow him specifically but in such broad terms that the writer almost seems as if to mention him occasionally to justify calling it his story. Mr. Nelson's writing style is just what you would expect from a journalist. So much so that I felt I was reading news reports of the action taking place in France at that time. I also had the feeling that this story was cobbled together from military reports and division diaries (acknowledged in the book). There are photos in the book (kudos) but what I felt was really needed were maps of the actions since much of the book is about troop movement, German front line fortifications and various attacks and retreats. Perhaps Mr. Nelson will put those in a future edition. So while I got a very broad story about the Corps in WWI, I felt that the title of the book promised a lot more about "Lucky Cates" then was delivered.
