The Revolutionary Program That Gets Your Kids To Listen Without Nagging, Reminding, or Yelling
Why does it feel sometimes as if our children have special powers that enable them to tune us out completely? You ask your child to do her homework, get ready for school or bedtime. You think she heard you but . . . no response. You’ve tried everything—time-outs, nagging, counting to three—and nothing seems to work. In this invaluable book, Amy McCready, founder of the popular online parenting course Positive Parenting Solutions, presents a nag-and-scream-free program for compassionately yet effectively, correcting your children’s bad behavior.
McCready draws on Adlerian psychology and Positive Discipline, which focuses on the central idea that every human being has a basic need to feel connected and empowered—children being no exception to the rule. According to McCready, when this need isn’t met in positive ways, kids resort to negative methods. In this book she provides parents with a virtual toolbox of strategies they can use to give their children the attention and power they crave—and do away with the misbehaving that adults dread.

Life-changing is the way I would describe both this book and the Positive Parenting Solutions online course. I joined the course after reaching an all-time low with my son's behavior on vacation in June. I went through the entire online course as quickly as I could manage, and I saw improvements immediately after implementing the first few tools. Tools! Since having my son, I have been striving to use positive discipline with him, but so often I didn't know how to accomplish my goal and would end up resorting to yelling or punishment. Both the online program and this book give you detailed TOOLS that you can implement in all different situations to make your family life more calm and enjoyable. Tools for both preventing misbehavior and for dealing with it in the moment. As soon as I finished the online course, I ordered the book. It has a lot of the same information but in more detail, and what I liked most about it were all the real-world examples. I think we learn best by examples that we can relate to, followed by detailed instructions for how to manage the same situation more positively. Some of the examples were cringe-worthy, as I considered how my son must have felt as I ordered him through the day, micro-managing every little thing. Amy is calming, relate-able, and a reformed yeller herself! I believe you will be motivated by this book to make positive changes for your family. One thing I didn't expect from the book (and course) was learning so much about myself in the process. Expect that these changes may take more time than yelling or punishing because your children will not be operating out of fear, but as you put the tools to use you can feel good about your parenting and about each bit of progress you and your children are making. I cannot recommend this book enough! I think all parents should read it!! Success stories: My son's once dangerously cluttered playroom has been clean for 3-4 weeks! It used to be a struggle to take my son near a store as he would get upset if he didn't get anything. After implementing an allowance, he feels empowered to by what he wants, but he is now tempering those wants as he learns about the value of money. My 5 year old is now getting himself up with an alarm clock and can get ready all on his own - he takes pride in learning new things that he can do. My son is now contributing by helping out around the house, doing his laundry, getting the dogs water, etc... There is a new success every day!
