Overview

On his fifth album, 2023's eponymously titled Illenium, the Bay Area DJ further illuminates his anthemic sound, infusing it with a heavy dose of emo and pop-punk energy. The record follows 2021's Fallen Embers, for which he topped the dance charts and garnered his first-ever Grammy nomination, for Best Dance/Electronic Album. This time out, Illenium continues his upward trajectory crafting immediately hooky, club-ready tracks anchored by a string of nicely curated guest artists. Here, we get Teddy Swims on the soulful "All that Really Matters," Jxdn on the punky "Lifeline," and both Avril Lavigne and Travis Barker on the driving "Eyes Wide Shut." Equally engaging guest spots pop up elsewhere, as with JVKE on the romantic, boy band-esque ballad "With All My Heart" and All Time Low on the epic and yearning "Back to You." Much of Illenium hits that sweet spot between dancefloor uplift and emo-rock catharsis. ~ Matt Collar
