This introductory textbook of pediatrics is unique in its presentation, organization, graphics, and design. It has been written to provide a concise and highly condensed synopsis of core information related to the more common diagnostic and management problems of children. Intentionally, basic physiology is not included in order to emphasize only clinically relevant material. Given the enormous scope of current information related to pediatrics, this goal of condensation is a worthy one and one that is accomplished well. The textbook is largely intended for medical students. Certainly those in nursing and other disciplines will also find the work extremely helpful. The authors suggest that postgraduate physicians may find the work suitable when preparing for examinations. The latter audience, however, will more likely find the material too basic for this purpose. The authors are creditable authorities. Many of the chapters are written by well-known subspecialists. The unique features of this work include its illustrations. It is literally filled with high-quality tables, figures, and color photographs. The text itself is presented in lecture note style using bullets and short sentences. Unfortunately, the tables are presented with a graduated background shading, which makes the bottom of all of the tables a bit difficult to read. Otherwise, the illustrations are of unusually high quality. The table of contents and index are well done, and the suggested reading list after each chapter has been carefully selected and is timely. The overall appearance of the book, which is in soft cover, is of a high quality. Excellent paper stock has been used, which allows for superiorreproduction of the graphics. This is an excellent addition to the numerous existing works intended to present a concise overall view of pediatrics at the introductory level. What makes it worthy in this regard are the precise use of space and the unique presentation in terms of graphic materials. Medical school pediatric clerkship directors should carefully examine this book for its potential inclusion in medical student curricular reading. It would nicely complement current study guide requirements.

Description: This is the fifth edition of a practical, clinically relevant, easy-to-use, abundantly illustrated textbook of pediatrics from highly respected editors and authors from the U.K. This edition has been updated with new chapters about child protection and global health and includes access to an ebook version.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a learning resource on the care of children. The material is well presented in the print and ebook version. This book definitely meets its objectives.
Audience: The audience is pediatric provider medical trainees at every level, as is stated in the foreword and preface, but the book also would be a valuable resource for nurse practitioners, nursing students, and physician assistant students and providers. The authors and contributors are almost all from the U.K., but the foreword notes that it has been seen in medical libraries in many countries all over the world. The authors and contributors are highly respected experts.
Features: This is a pretty comprehensive book that covers every major topic beginning with the child in society and includes all subspecialties. The best aspects of this book include the way it presents the material, such as the basic approach and principles, in a colorful and entertaining way which makes it fun...even for a pediatrician with over 35 years of clinical experience. The key points are clearly presented in each section of each chapter. The key concepts are summarized at the end of each section and the authors do an excellent job.
Assessment: This is a very well illustrated, comprehensive textbook of pediatrics and an excellent learning and review resource for pediatric providers in training. This valuable learning and review resource for trainees at every level of education has been thoughtfully revised and updated. As Dr. Craft states in the foreword, it is not a surprise that this book has won many awards. I will definitely recommend it to the medical students I am teaching here in the United States as a practical learning tool.
