After her twin brother Ioan enlists in 1915, Haf trains as a Voluntary Aid Detachments nurse. Called up to a convalescent hospital in the Vale of Glamorgan, she reports to a religious Matron and is put in charge of a three-bed ward for injured ex-servicemen.
