I bought this for my grandchildren and had not the least interest in reading it. But I did open the book to read a few pages and was thoroughly delighted. It is beautifully written. You know how it is when you read something and the words are almost massaging. I smiled. I laughed. I cried. I laughed again. A wonderful, wonderful read!

Read this book in elementary school and I still have my original copy which is 30 years old. I was taken in by the story and it is one of my all-time favorites. If you love animals, you will love this book!

The Incredible Journey this heartwarming novel is about a young golden retriever, an old bull terrier, and Siamese cat whose strong bond keeps them together and alive fighting starvation and nature and the animals in it. This book spoke to me about what bonds of strong true friends can do for you in a good situation. That friends can and will if there good enough, protect you to the death if they are true friends like on page # 35 when the curious young cub came and played with the old sleeping dog. Then all of a sudden the cat came back and as soon as he gazed at the sight he was on the cubs back clawing then momma bear came and so did the golden retriever and together the cat and dog drove away the protecting mother bear from their friend. Another example is how when one of the animals were hungry they'd share the food they had even if it wasn't even enough for them a good example of this is on page #60 last paragraph. This sparked a curiosity in me kinda questioning how well my friends are if their true like the friends in this book. This book sort of inspired me to be a better friend to all my friends so they can always count on me. I believe that the title fits this book perfectly because quiet honestly it was an incredible journey. If you don't like slow books this is for you because action starts off right away it doesn't take forever like some other books. I believe that this book does deserve the award of one of the best animal stories ever written. This story really shows that if the love/bond is true enough no matter how many miles, rivers, lakes or oceans it can't keep the love or bond apart.

The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford is a classic tale of three animal friends who travel over rough country and persevere through all hardships and danger. There are times of danger and thrills. Along the way they learn each others limit's and strengths and trust that their friends will always be there for them. The cat and the older dog are the jokers of the bunch and the retriever the glue that holds them together. The author's style with descriptions and attention to detail are very satisfying and create a scene that will bring the reader right into the clearing with the animals and what they face on this magnificent journey. The humans in the story are wrought with finesse and you feel their anguish and joy in equal parts. I especially like the young man's belief that all would be well and his character remained determined in this. The love of the young girl for her cat was so achingly pure. I recommend this great book for all teenage young readers even more than seeing the movie as so many are prone to do nowadays. You just don't get the same intensity from a movie as reading the thoughts of the animals themselves written in the book. This book could also be read to younger children by their parents as a great bed-time story for the family. I read this story some 40 years ago when I was a young girl and always remembered it with fondness and decided to buy it the other day when I realized I did not have it in my library. I bought the last book in stock at Barnes & Nobles that day and was so excited. I truly enjoyed reading it again at 51 years of age as much as I did when younger. It still brought tears to my eyes. What a great book.

Sheila Burnford takes us in an incredible journey in the wilderness of Canada with Luath, a young Labrador; Bodger, an old American bull terrier; and Tao, a Siamese cat. The journey takes place in the northwestern part of Ontario, Canada. After a misunderstanding between the owners of the animals, the animals set out, following the road going hundreds of miles west. The Animals' goal was to reunite with their owners in the city. Throughout the journey they find themselves in many completely different situations. Once they were attacked by a bear and another time they were offered help and joy by an Indian tribe. To think that these obedient animals go through all this on bare feet only to reach their lovable owners is truly amazing. If I had to rate this book on a scale of one to ten, I would probably give it an eight. I would firmly recommend you to ask yourself questions after every passage while reading this book because it will help. So, are you ready for an incredible journey with one hundred miles of barking?

A heart warming story. Encompasses the devotion of animals to man and their devotion to each other. Overcoming all odds against them and working together to make sure all survive. Though it is fiction there are many true stories of animals finding their way to the humans they love. Being a lover of all animals some of the food scenes are a tad bit sickening. I know that this is nature but I could of done without those details. Despite this it is charming and a good read.

Incredible to believe, but impossible not to love and "a must" for pet lovers everywhere. January 2011

No matter how many times I read this book, I always cry when Shadow emerges over the hill in the final chapter. This is a truly lovely story of faithfulness, bravery, and love. I've read it several times (and was pleasantly surprised when the movie with Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and Don Ameche did such a great job of bringing the animals to the screen) and am never disappointed.

Touching, suspenseful, endearing, memorable. Seila Burnford's story about three pets who journey across the Canadian wilderness to get back to their owners. This book is a great follow-up (or preface to) The Call of the Wild, as themes of wilderness survival, loyalty, bravery, and friendhip are in both but The Incredible Journey is considerably less violent. Good as a read aloud for younger audiences (ages 5-7) or as an independent read (ages 8 and up).

This heart-warming story is for animal and non-animal lovers indeed. There is nothing that can be quite as stirring as a story of where the heart always leads to, especially since the movie that was based off of it wasn't the best show of this book....

For those who love E.B. White and other anthropomorphic tales, this is a good fit. The story has a brisk pace and the adventure of it all will engage kids, even younger kids.

The Incredible Journey is the captivating story of three family pets and their dangerous journey home through the Canadian wilderness. This was really an emotional story for me. I am a born animal lover, and the trials that this intrepid trio suffered, along with their intense bravery and devotion to their owners, brought tears to my eyes more than once. The Incredible Journey is a wonderfully entertaining story of love, loyalty, and perseverance. Full of adventure and excitement, it was an excellent choice for me.

A story illustrating the sometimes overlooked capacity of animals to develop a fierce love for one another as well as an overwhelming love for their masters. Three well-loved and well-trained pets--two dogs and a cat--try to make their way back to their family across almost 300 miles of Canadian wilderness. We see how the task is accomplished by each animal bringing a skill to aid the others in times of danger or lack. We see the personalities of each animal displayed by their experiences along the way. A lovely story for young and old.

Two dogs and a cat travel on a 300 mile journey to try to reunite with their family that they deeply miss. This book is full of adventure and is very heart-warming, but is largely predictable. Middle school students, especially animal lovers, will really enjoy this book. I do appreciate that the interest level and the reading levels of "The Incredible Journey" are appropriate for middle schoolers, and that it has positive themes of friendship and determination.
