INDIA BITES YOU SOMEHOW – TRUE-LIFE TALES of 40 Westerners Discovering the Sacred Through the Chaos of One Magnificent Country

Will your next step lead you to nirvana or land you in cow dung?

INDIA BITES YOU SOMEHOW is a rollicking collection of true stories that take you deep into the heart of the magical, mysterious Indian experience. Forty people from nineteen countries share their journeys -- both worldly and sacred -- from the 1960s to the present, where they encountered such questions as…

Should I follow the yogi into the jungle to pursue man-eating tigers? Should I give this persistent, maimed child even more rupees? Dare I punch the porter who just pinched me on the behind, or argue with the government official who refuses to extend my visa? Is this guru really enlightened? Will I survive this tsunami rushing toward me? Will I ever be able to get off the toilet?

These narratives – moving, terrifying, hilarious, awe-inspiring -- were recorded by the holy mountain Arunachala in South India, considered by many to be the most powerful place on Earth.
If you have been to India, you might recognize yourself in these pages. If you would like to come to India, this is advance warning, but with lots of encouragement. If you know you’ll never make it to India, this will take you deep into its essence, minus the scary microbes. And you will find out why, as one Canadian woman says, “Anything is possible in India! It really is! You might go crazy in the process, but it is possible!”

Here are a few appetizers from INDIA BITES YOU SOMEHOW:

I went back up to our room and a while later heard a knock on the door. When I opened it, I saw a contingent of five people. It included the plumber with his tools, his assistant, the assistant’s assistant, and two more for backup. They all marched into our room, went into the bathroom, unscrewed the pipe completely off the wall and put it on the floor. With the pipe off, suddenly a thick black sludge oozed onto the bathroom floor. They didn’t say anything then all of them turned around and left the room!
-- Martha, Canada

Over there under the shed is Lakshmi the cow. We rescued her. She only has three and a half legs. We have two monkeys over there. Several eagles have been brought to us who were injured from electrical shock. The first eagle we had would not eat, so I asked the staff what they fed him and they told me rice. I said, “Eagles don’t eat rice! Throw in some raw meat!”
-- Leslie, United States

When I am working in the medical camps, I feel, whoa, I was lucky to have been born in the West. I could have been born here and had to deal with such suffering.
-- Erica, Holland

A few yogis were absolutely whacked out and angry -- others would not even talk with us. One threw rocks at us to insure his privacy. Fortunately his aim was not very good!
-- Armand, United States

While you are waiting the hour or two or three, you're sitting thigh to thigh on the floor with about 8,000 strangers and you all want the same thing at the same time -- Daddy's love.
-- Meg, United States

When I was twenty I opened a book about Ramana and fell in love with his beautiful face. I read some of his quotes about the Self and immediately I felt one hundred- per-cent yes -- this is the truth.
-- John, Scotland

The beauty of Tiruvannamalai is the question who am I? There is the space here to be with that question, without any explanation needed. Maybe that is not so obvious in other places. It is the life force of Arunachala. There is a breathing space with that here.

About the Author

THE AUTHOR

Kai Mayerfeld is an American who has spent much of the last two decades living in India, where she currently spends about six months a year. She has traveled throughout India, slept in mud huts, opulent houses, temples, meditation centers and everything in between. She has lived in an ashram with a great spiritual master, fed sadhus, cleaned many a toilet, laid in a hospital feverish with malaria, and met remarkable characters, all who have been her teachers. And drank, oh, about 10,000 cups of chai! This book is an act of gratitude for how India has forever changed her sense of the possible and the real.
