About the Author

Jarrah Ali Al-Tubaikh is a radiology consultant, accredited as a Facharzt by the German Board of Radiology. Dr. Al-Tubaikh graduated in May 2003 from the Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait City, Kuwait and in March 2012 from the Ludwig-Maximillian Universität (LMU), Klinikum Groβhadern, Institut für Klinische Radiologie, Munich, Germany, where he studied under the supervision of Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h.c. Maximilian Reiser. He has an interest and has specialized in the diagnosis of rare disorders based on radiological techniques.

Description: This unusual book superbly blends two specialties that are not commonly thought of together - internal medicine and radiology.
Purpose: In a bit of insight into how this book came about, the author notes he spent time as an internist and a surgeon before moving to radiology. This background has served him well. As a former mentor of mine, Dr. A. Archie Feinstein, used to say, one should be a good generalist before being a specialist. A book focused on radiological studies as viewed by an internal medicine specialist is a highly practical one, and the author does an extremely good job.
Audience: The audience includes any clinicians looking for a practical book about the best imaging studies for particular situations. The author stays away from the one-study-fits-all thinking and gives a rationale based on physiology for choosing one study over another. This results in a highly successful book. The author is from Germany and clearly not influenced by the monetary issues dominating American medicine.
Features: The book is divided into organ systems and then by specific problems. Short sections cover the anatomy, physiology, and some pathology followed by the significant signs found using different imaging modalities, i.e. radiographs, ultrasound, Doppler, contrast studies, MRI, etc., with many well-reproduced images. One issue that was not clear to me at first is that some images that appeared too perfect were drawn by the author. They are well done, but they do take away from the book slightly. I would have preferred that the author correspond with others to obtain clinical images, but I do understand how this occurred.
Assessment: This is a very good book despite the limitations of the drawings. It would be a great book for teaching institutions and residency training programs, as it brings together the imaging decision-making process with the anatomy and physiology that should be considered.
