About the Author

#1 New York Times Bestselling author Ilona Andrews is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

The hero of this stand-alone book, was a remorseless villain whose Iron Dog soldiers killed one if my favorite characters (Aunt Bea) in the Kate Daniels series. I really didn't think the authors could overcome my aversion to Hugh d'Ambray, but they pretty much did just that. If you haven't read the Kate Daniels series, thats ok because this book stands on its own. It's a book about 2 imperfect people who reluctantly join forces to protect those who follow them. Battle magic and mayhem ensue and make for an exciting time.

Quite possibly their best book yet. Complex characterizations with two main characters who are clearly ambivalent about each other and-- to a lesser degree-- about themselves. Personal interactions are masterfully handled, not an off note from start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next book.

I really enjoy Ilona Andrew’s portrayal of leadership and power. It feels believable and like a terrible world that I still don’t quite want to leave. The nuances of humanity and the complexity of humans is on display. Great job with making a villain into a hero, cementing Roland as that evil force and humanizing him to some degree, and setting up for the next series of events while maintaining a good story arc. The level of research on everything from castles, defenses, anatomy, metallurgy and mythology is so apparent and utilized so effectively that it feels like knowledge that the characters cannot only spit out but like it’s merely a facet of that knowledge. I love some competence porn! So excited for the next in this series and the last Daniels book.

This book is extremely well written, and well paced. Confession - I have never read a Kate Daniels book. However, I have read a couple of the the authors' other series. I love this book. I love the characters. I love how complex and human the characters are. The dialogue, the interactions, the world building is just brilliant. Thoroughly well-done!

I was eagerly anticipating the release of this book like a million other people! My big question was "How can they possibly make a super villain a hero??? And then make me care about him?!?!??". Well, they did it! Hugh became a person you want to care about and wonder what he'll do next. Fortunately, he's still arrogant, snarky, and fearless and you begin to understand what previously drove him and that he was Roland's biggest pawn. Getting more backstory about his childhood years and seeing the guilt he now carries with him everywhere made him so much more human. I love Elara and can't wait to learn more about her in the upcoming installments. She's a perfect match for Hugh and watching them constantly antagonize each other and fall in love in the process was great. I don't want to say more and spoil any thing so my advice? Run, don't walk, and read this book! I wish I could give it 10 stars!!! Enjoy!

These authors never disappoint and this book is no exception. I’ve read everything they’ve put out and can’t wait for the next chapter in this series or any of the others. If you’ve only just started reading them I envy you. Enjoy!

I have followed the Kate Daniels series from the first book. When Ilona posted an April fool's joke, it was awesome - a promo for a book taking one of the villains from the KD series and making him the protagonist. As a joke it was hilarioush but they got so much feedback saying, "I would totally buy this book," they eventually actually wrote it. And what a book it is! Iron and Magic fits right into the KD universe, and PLAUSIBLY works with his personality so he is a (anti-)hero (think Dirty Harry). That's ok, it's a tough world and it takes tough people to survive in it. Few if any of the characters in the KD universe are nice people - but they are all people you care about, warts and all. As Elara puts it at one point in the book, "Yes, he's a monster, but he's MY monster!" If you are a fan of the KD universe, read and enjoy. It is every bit as enjoyable as the main story arc. They really do write awesome novels, even about the villains!

This series just keeps on giving. I love this view into the life and trials of other characters. It’s a sign of great writing and a solid plot line when the book captivates even without the usual main characters. Well done.

It's difficult to read about Hugh from such different prospectives, knowing what we know from Kate Daniels series, but interesting nonetheless. Good story. I'm looking forward to the next book.
