Is the Sky Awake?

Is the Sky Awake? is a journey with a delightful fairy through dawn’s natural sights and sounds including baby birds begging, fish jumping, roosters crowing and ants working. Each double page visually and actively leads the reader from the left page with fairy footsteps and the accompanying action word to the active, colorful scenes on the right page including the imbedded fairy to find and repetitive engaging text.

A life-long educator of children of all ages, Melinda Michels has an understanding of what basic skills young readers need to practice and what features entice and engage young readers. Is the Sky Awake? has it all. It is complete with finger-walking footsteps in the left-to-right pattern in our English language. The left page also includes repeated sounds or actions for the readers to say aloud. The leading footsteps draw the young reader to the paired right page that includes engaging age appropriate text, with just enough repetition to ease independent reading. The colorfully detailed, beautifully crafted nature scenes draw the eye to searching for the fairy and morning's awakening activities for that double page scene.

The inspiration for Is the Sky Awake? came from Melinda's younger daughter, Carmen, asking each morning that very question to know if it was time to rise. They would lift the bottom portion of her shade in the morning to look out and see what activity was happening in the front yard. Carmen would see if the sky was awake by noticing critters moving about, dew sparkling, flowers blooming, and sure enough, her dog shaking! This delightful and engaging journey is sure to be a favorite of the very young and not so very young!

About the Author

Melinda Michels is an educator and mother of four who resides in Sioux Falls, SD with her youngest, Carmen, who is the inspiration for "Is the Sky Awake?". Melinda has taught children from preschool through high school, including all academics and tae kwon do. Her greatest joy is witnessing a child be successful at something that they have worked hard at mastering. She can be reached at Fb.me/IstheSkyAwake.com and IstheSkyAwake@gmail.com.
Leena Noel is known for her mystical abstract oil paintings and intricate line work. Her first digital project, "Is the Sky Awake?", ignited a spark of creating out of her usual style and led to new shapes with a discovery of how technology can aid her creations. Noel's work typically has a focus on the differences of "common sense" and the idea of perceptions within the universal collection of all. Expressing a feeling of the interconnection of all beings and a disjunction of the perceptions between us, Noel explores manners in which we all intertwine as well as our separations in minute ways. By virtue of a study delving into herself, mixed with research to back her theories, she then works to create her own stories with a merging of the senses in order to speak through her own personal language. Moving towards the future, Noel will continue to create via oil paintings, yet also place more time into photography and installation art, for it does strike her fancy. She is always interested in receiving new project ideas, commissions, and/or comments. For a more in depth look visit: leenanoel.com Leena Noel finished her degree in Art from Southern Oregon University and continues to learn through her own volition.
