This is a very lovely gift book depicting the history of Jane Austen’s book covers, along with some fabulously snarky commentary. It’s fascinating and fun to see the different book cover art through the years since Austen was first published. We see international editions, first editions, movie-tie-in editions, as well as the common mass market paperback editions. Sullivan also spotlights the graphic novel and e-book versions that have come out in recent years, editions aimed at children and teenagers, as well as the scholarly and annotated ones by Oxford and Penguin. Alongside the gorgeous graphics, the author provides some very humorous commentary about each cover making me laugh out loud in many cases. Synopses of each Austen work (including the lesser known and previously unpublished), information for book collectors on collecting Austen, the history of Jane Austen publishing by time period, and Jane Austen’s own publishing experience round out the book. Sullivan writes in a readable and breezy style that informs as much as it entertains. A beautiful treat for any Jane Austen aficionado as well as anyone  interested in the history of book covers and cover art.
