Henry Rider Haggard (22. Juni 1856 - 14. Mai 1925) gilt als Pionier des literarischen Genres der sog. „Lost World“ oder auch „Lost Race“. 1885 erfolgte Haggards literarischer Durchbruch mit dem Roman ‚King Solomon‘s Mines‘ (1888 erschien die erste deutsche Buchausgabe) mit dem Jäger Allan Quatermain als Hauptakteur. Viele seiner Romane spielen in exotischen Ländern und handeln von untergegangenen Zivilisationen.
