Jilted in January, book 1

Rose Leyton is stuck at the Duke of Beckworth’s country estate waiting for the return of her betrothed. If it wasn’t for the handsome assistant land agent, Mr. Colin Ford, she might believe she had ceased to exist at all. But when her intended arrives things aren’t quite how she expected.

As the youngest son of an impoverished peer, Colin is all too aware of how it feels to be ignored. His impulsive offer to save Miss Leyton from an unwanted marriage quickly becomes more serious than either of them anticipated. Can they both step out of the shadows and find a way to true independence and happiness?

When matrimonial matters don’t go quite as planned, can one jilted bride and an unlikely hero save the day?

Rose Leyton lives at the Duke of Beckworth’s estate with her elder aunt while her brother and fiance are away. Mr. Colin Ford is the new land manager at the estate. When he finds that the last land manager has taken off and left his office a mess, he’s very grateful for Rose’s help. When she gets jilted by her fiance, he does what he can to help her out. This was a really quick and cute story. It flowed very easily. I liked both main characters very much. I look forward to reading more from this series. **I received an ARC of this story in exchange for an honest review

When an arranged betrothal turns into a girl's worst nightmare, will a handsome acquaintance turn out to be the man of her dreams. Jilted In January was a pleasant surprise. The few books I have read by Kate Pearce have been raunchy and lacking in story. Not so with Rose and Colin. Don't get me wrong there were some steamy moments this is a tempestuous romantic relationship after all. Ms. Pearce brought to the table an engrossing story that had a complex insight that is usually lacking at least for me in her stories. I stand in awe of this short and compelling masterpiece.

Jilted in January by Kate Pearce is a well written book. Ms Pearce has delivered fantastic characters, drama, humor and sizzle. I enjoyed Jilted in January and look forward to reading more from Kate Pearce in the future. Jilted in January is book 1 of the A Year Without a Duke Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

This is book 1 in A Year Without a Duke series, a multi-author series. Rose Leyton is living at the Duke of Beckworth's country estate waiting on her brother and fiancee to return from the war. Feeling restless and bored, she volunteers to help the assistant land agent, Colin Ford, clean up the mess that the land agent left upon his fleeing the estate. Colin enjoys spending time with Rose and since she is already betrothed, he can act himself instead of acting as a peer of the realm. When Rose learns that her fiancee has married another, Colin steps up with a marriage proposal of his own, when it looks like she will be married off to cruel man. Can the marriage of convience turn into one of love. This is the first book of five that tells the story of the residents of the Duke of Beckworth's estate. Having read all 5 of them, I would definitely recommend reading them all together, although they could be read as stand alone. I enjoyed this short story. I liked that Colin and Rose became friends before anything romantic started between them. I was a very enjoyable quick read! Thanks go out to the author via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

"Jilted in January" is the first book in the "A Year Without a Duke" series. This first edition to the series is by Kate Pearce. A series built upon the missing Duke of Beckworth all written by different authors. Certainly a new experience for me. I cannot wait to see how well the stories all fit together. Rose Leyton is waiting at the Duke of Beckworth's estate for her bethrothed to finally come home from the war and marry her already! Colin Ford is also at the same estate trying to pick up the pieces of the mess left by the former crooked land agent. This was a fast-paced, engaging story with great character development. I adored Colin's character and loved the way he championed for Rose when her brother and "intended" finally arrived at the estate. There were definitely sparks between the two. The only reason I am giving this story 4 stars is that the story just ends. Yes, all loose ends between Rose and Colin's romance are tied up but it seemed a bit abrupt. I'm hoping this is due only to the fact that there are still more stories to go with the entire story line which I cannot wait to get my hands on. ARC received from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Everything a historical novel should be – yes – it is! The writing made me FEEL as if I were back in time with people living by different rules and yet each character was believable and interesting. I love historical novels and stories set in the past and this one was a delight. The premise is that the Duke of Beckworth has died but nobody is quite sure who will assume his title and lands. In this first novella of the series Colin Ford, fifth son of an Earl, is working as the assistant land agent on the Beckworth estate. His superior has disappeared and left a mess that he will need to deal with. Miss Rose Leyton, a distant relation of the Duke’s, is acting as a companion to an elderly aunt while waiting for her fiancé to return from war. Both Rose and Colin have noticed one another and are friends so when Rose’s betrothal is broken, her brother appears with ideas of marrying her off to someone else she is repelled by and Colin steps in as a temporary fiancé things become interesting. Before the story ends there are fisticuffs, a thief is caught, a treasure is found and a marriage takes place. This story is well written, in keeping with the time period and just plain fun. I loved the quietness of both Colin and Rose and their circumspect behavior…until things changed…and oh my…how their relationship changed when it was time for it to do so! Thank you to NetGalley and CrushStar Multimedia LLC for the copy of this ARC to read and review.

You know you are reading a well written story when you like everything about it. This is the first book in the series A Year Without a Duke. Rose Leyton is pretty much at the mercy of distant relatives when she meets Mr. Colin Ford, a man that pretty much has nothing to offer her but a much needed friendship. Their friendship blooms into something deeper as time passes but neither of them can (or want) to accept it of course due to the circumstances of the times. Their relationship is definitely believable and romantic. The bedroom scenes although steamy didn’t feel forced or out of place; to me they were just a couple learning to love each other in a most sensual way. The main plot had a sort of suspense underlying that added a great mix to the whole and gave Colin that look of being a hero without coming across as an Alpha and that I very much applaud (sometimes I get tired of those, not often mind you, but sometimes I do). This story was such a delight to read that I finished it in one sitting. I’ll definitely be reading other books by the same author and of course the rest of the books in this series. ** I was gifted a copy of this story in exchange for an honest review **

I received this from the author for a review... Kate makes history so real. I adore her stories even when they are in a format that isn't my favorite. This is the intro story in a 5 part story buy different authors. It would make a great box set but as it is set up it's a serial of sorts. There's no cliffhanger for each romance story but there is a mystery or two that will not be resolved until the last novella...Who's the next duke? What's going on with the missing jewels? My rating is 4 instead of 5 stars because of it's format, not the story. Kate's story is about Colin Ford, the 5th son of an impoverished earl, who is the new assistant land agent. He's been trying to get his "boss" Archibald Morehouse to teach him the ropes. The book opens when he discovers Mr. Morehouse has resigned, emptied the cash box and ransacked the office before absconding. Poor Colin has to report to the London solicitors how the estate is faring and he fears Mr. Morehouse has stolen from the estate for years. Miss Rose Leyton comes to his aid in straightening the ransacked office, relieving her boredom attending to her elderly Great Aunt. She is a distant relative residing under the family's protection while she waits for her brother and his best friend, her betrothed, to return from the Napoleonic wars. They become friends and he finds she's quite astute in aiding him in bringing order from chaos. When her brother returns and she finds her fiance has married another, Colin find himself coming to her aid in return. This is a delightful love story and introduction to this mystery of "a year without a Duke".

This is a fast paced read and an excellent start to the multi-author series A Year without a Duke. The Duke of Beckworth has died and the hunt is on to locate the new one. While waiting to find out who the new Duke is the people at his country estate work at keeping the household running. Rose is a cousin of the Duke and is staying waiting for her fiancé and brother to return from the war. Colin is the assistant land agent trying to make his own way in the world. Colin feels sorry for the way Rose’s family treats her and when he tries to protect her he gets more than he bargained for. Great story with excellent characters. Loved it and looking forward to more.

A Year Without a Duke - Book No. 1 Beckworth Park - 1816 The Duke of Beckworth has died and a search is on for his heir. Miss Rose Leyton, has lived at the estate as an impoverished relative of the late Duke and is doing all she can to help keep the estate running. She has been betrothed to a man for seven years and is waiting for him to return to England after serving in the war. Mr. Colin Ford, the younger son of an impoverished Earl, is the new land agent. The former land agent ran off right after the Duke died, stealing money and leaving the estate records in a mess. No one knows why he did this. Rose offers to help Colin sort through the mess of papers left by the former land agent. She is a great help and soon they have things straightened out. Their togetherness during this task soon turns into an attraction. When Rose receives a letter from her betrothed informing her that he has met and married someone else thus breaking their betrothal, she is hurt. At the same time, she receives a letter from her brother, best friends with her ex-fiancee, telling her that both of them are going to visit her as her brother is insisting on finding a husband for her. She is furious! When the men arrive, Colin steps in and tells them that he and Rose are engaged. He does this to help shield Rose from a forced marriage. That’s when her brother insists that they marry immediately. What will they do now? This is a sweet romance and the first book of five in this series. Copy provided by the author via NetGalley.

This is the first book of 5 (each standalone novellas) by different authors, with a continuing story arc in that the Duke of Beckworth is currently an absentee post, as the reigning duke has died, and it's unclear who the proper successor is! In this story, Colin is the assistant to the Land Agent, a rather unscrupulous fellow who has abandoned the estate (and stolen from it as well) and left Colin with quite a paperwork mess to deal with. Rose is living at the Estate, a distant cousin of the family and a woman who is patiently waiting for the return of her fiance from his soldiering duties. She's rather bored, and helping Colin gives her something to do, and a new and solid friendship. When her fiance abruptly ends their engagement, Colin steps in, and a marriage of convenience happens in the blink of an eye. Suddenly these two friends find themselves in a much more intimate situation than they had ever imagined - can their friendship lead to love? I really enjoyed this introduction to the series, and the romance within. There is a clear picture of the responsibilities and expectations of the time for all of the characters. Colin knows that as the fifth son of an impoverished Earl, he's got to make his own way in life and he's quite happy working as a businessman, numbers and accounting being his forte. He's a handsome gentleman too, and a kind and generous man. He and Rose clearly get along well together, and they both enjoy the relative freedom of being friendly with each other without any commitments (since when they meet Rose is engaged). I liked Rose's character too, her desire to stand up for herself and ensure that her future is going to be of her choosing (even though it ends up not quite how she expected!). Colin and Rose made a lovely couple, and they definitely share an attraction to each other that leads to some sensual scenes. I appreciated their ability to be truthful with each other and that communication definitely wasn't a problem. Lovely happy ending to this one, and an entertaining and solid story. Looking forward to reading more in the series!
