This second edition of the collected Judge Dredd stories originally featured in 2000 AD, take the Judge in a new direction. This volume features both the Cursed Earth saga which features Dredd making a cross country trip across the nuclear waste land that was America and the second story features Judge Cal, a character strongly influenced bythe Roman emperor Caligula. Both stories are serialized tales ans add a certain depth to the character of Dredd giving him the opportunity to move beyond the 'I am the law' Dredd of the first volume. The Cursed Earth saga does this best. Removing Dredd from Mega-city One and putting him into a world full of mutants, robot vampires, military robots and more. Dredd is more a peace officer than the Judge, jury and executioner of before. This is a great sci-fi, adventure, action tale full uf memorable characters and events. The Caligula story is probably the stronger of the two. Returning Dredd back to the Mega-city he loves he finds himself leading an underground rebellion against a mad Chief Judge based loosely on the Cagulia of the 'I Claudius' book and TV show. Dredd scrapes the belly of the mega-city in this story as he becomes a fugitive and rebel leader being hunted by the mad Judge. This a compelling story that creates a complete narrative despite the limitations of being serialized in a comic book. I came away understanding the Judges better seeing Refer world differently.
