Rap's been popping up in kids' music for years, but there's a difference between the way a well-meaning Caucasian folksinger busts a rhyme and the way it's done by honest-to-goodness rappers. With JUMP ON IT, children's music gets its most authentic hip-hop record to date, performed by one of the genre's originators, the Sugarhill Gang. It's a cheerful, irresistibly rhythmic, old-school-styled combination of original tunes - most of them mildly educational, like "ABC's," "The Vowels," and "Kick a Rhyme with Dr. Seuss" - combined with a couple of revamped covers. And these have to be heard to be believed: "It's Like a Dream Sometimes" is Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's menacing, groundbreaking masterpiece "The Message" redone as an all-positive tune about the joys of being a kid. Remember the signature line, "It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder how I keep from goin' under"? Here, it goes, "It's like a dream sometimes, and when you're havin' big fun, it's like a dream sometimes." And the Gang's own "Rapper's Delight," introduced by leader Joey "Master G" Robinson as "the first song that created the whole rap phenomenon," is retooled as "Kids' Rapper's Delight (Kids' Rap-Along)" - complete with its signature bass line borrowed from Chic's "Good Times." This stuff really kicks, and it provides needed diversity in the musically eclectic, but overwhelming lily-white world of children's music.
