Overview

On their eponymous debut album, Kai illustrates that they are gifted vocalists but this isn't necessarily the best judge of material. Like many of their post-Boyz II Men contemporaries, the quintet can deliver ballads in smooth, seductive tones with slight gospel overtones, plus they can do mildly funky dance-pop. They have the skills, but they don't always have the songs to sound convincing. When they do, such as on "Say You'll Stay," the results are quite engaging, but when they don't, there's not quite enough personality to make the mediocre material acceptable. Nevertheless, the group shows potential on Kai and that's enough to make the album a good debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
