Overview

Lakewalker Barr Foxbrush returns from two years of patrolling the bitter wilds of Luthlia against the enigmatic, destructive entities called malices, only to find that the secret daughter he'd left behind in the hinterland of Oleana has disappeared from her home after a terrible accusation. The search for her will call on more of Barr's mind and heart than just his mage powers, as he tries to balance his mistakes of the past and his most personal duties to the future. A stand-alone story set in the world of the Sharing Knife.

Bujold’s Sharing Knife series returns (after 2009’s Horizon) with this fun, short installment that offers a glimpse into familial life in the world of Oleana. Barr Foxbrush, a Lakewalker, makes his way home after two years fighting evil in the north and, along the way, discovers that Lily, the secret daughter he abandoned years before, has gone missing. Barr derails his travels to search for her, only to realize, once he finds her, that she has inherited his powerful Lakewalker magic. Finally forced to own up to the teenage indiscretion that led to Lily’s birth, Barr must work to bond with and make a home for his daughter. Bujold masterfully blends the domestic with the fantastical in her signature style. Though there are references to characters from the rest of the series, new readers will follow the plot with ease as Bujold lays out the intricacies of Lakewalker culture. This quick, nimble novel is an easy recommendation for fans eager to return to the Sharing Knife universe and anyone looking for light high fantasy fare. Lakewalker Barr Foxbrush has finally returned from patrolling Luthlia. It's been two years since he's visited the Oleana farm and his daughter, Lily, whose birth has been kept secret for 14 years, because Lakewalkers and farmers typically do not have children together. When Barr arrives, he discovers the farm burned and Lily gone. After a long search, Barr finds Lily coming into her own Lakewalker powers and begins teaching her how to control her gifts without revealing who he is or his place in her life. Then an attack sends Barr and Lily into the Lakewalker camp and the truth of her heritage is revealed, forcing Barr and Lily to make decisions that will have a huge impact on their futures. VERDICT Bujold's delightful prose delves once again into the Lakewalker world. While not submerged in high-action conflict, the thought-provoking plot is centered on character growth, family ties, and personal responsibility, and will appeal to readers interested in stories focused on these themes.—Kristi Chadwick, Massachusetts Lib.
