Anton Tchekhov est un écrivain russe né à Taganrog en 1860. Novelliste et dramaturge, il publie d'abord ses textes dans des journaux sous divers pseudonymes pour augmenter ses revenus. Le succès s'avère être au rendez-vous et on le considère très vite comme un nouveau Tolstoï ou un nouveau Dostoïevski. Atteint de la tuberculose, il s'éteindra lors d'un voyage pour une cure à Badenweiler, en Allemagne, en 1904.
