La storia si svolge in un arco temporale brevissimo: le prime ore del mattino del Venerdì Santo del 1923. L'ambientazione è un rigido collegio episcopale maschile tra le montagne del Tennessee (ispirato alla St. Andrew's School, realmente frequentata dall'autore).
