I love Terry Spear but this is my least favorite book and the only book of hers that I haven't given 5 stars. It was a great story line but the ending felt rushed and unfinished. I also kept waiting for the earl to come to her rescue and be the hero but he sent his advisor every time, which made the story less romantic for me. I also wasn't a fan of the earls personality in the beginning but towards the end he seemed to completly change. The earl wasn't in the story as much as the heros in Spears other stories which was also disappointing because I couldn't understand how they had fallen for each other without spending much time together. Caroline mentioned several times how handsome the earl was which made it seem she just fell for him based on looks, although the earl said he loved her for her spirit which was sweet. However I do love similarities between this book and her highlander books

When I started this book I was very aggravated with the way they dictated what Lady Caroline could and couldn't do. But then she started to show some backbone and disrupt their plans. As the mystery of who was killing their animals started to heat up she becomes the sleuth. The action became so intense with just a tease of romance that I couldn't put it down! What a shock! I wound up really enjoying the story.

Lady Caroline is investigating the crimes against her mother’s lands. But a pesky Earl is trying to keep her from doing so by requesting her presence at every chance he could. Was he involved in these crimes or did he have other things on his mind. Without a father, Caroline also keeps her family’s books and tends to other tasks needed. She didn’t have time to waste on a man who changes women every time the wind changes direction. Earl Lord John Talbot is intrigued by Lady Caroline and he can’t seem to spend enough time with her. She is unlike any other Lady he’d met. But her insistence on catching the men involved in livestock slaughters on her land made him worry for her safety. I don’t normally read historical romance but I loved this story. Not only is there romance but also a mystery. Lady Caroline was entertaining and Lord Talbot was totally hot. The story and mystery kept me guessing. If you like historical and sweet romance with suspense and mystery then you will enjoy this story. I listened to this book on audio and really enjoyed the actor reading it.

Lady Caroline is almost an old maid... At 19 she is still not married. But due to the untimely death of her father, she helps her Lady Mother run their estate. Lady Caroline is stubborn and strong willed. When someone is killing their livestock; Lady Caroline makes it her job to find and stop whomever is responsible. She and her mother make a trip to see the Earl to ask for his assistance. Once, he sees Caroline, he decides to help her and have her. Lady Caroline seems to find herself on the wrong end of the search. She is knocked out, shot (bow and arrow) at and all sorts of things that find her up a tree. Through Caroline's gift of drawing they have an artist's sketch as to what the man looks like that is raiding the livestock. Through all sorts of twists and turns, Caroline is able to capture the Earl's heart. This type of writing really shows that Terry Spear's can write! She doesn't use sex in this book to try and keep the reader's attention. The most passionate is kissing.. But the implications and the writing help the readers see the story in their mind. Good Job!!
