Lady Rises by Renee Bernard

LADY RISES serves up the next relentless installment in the Black Rose Trilogy and leaves no doubt that Hell hath no fury like a woman wronged but when that woman is Raven Wells-the Devil himself would rather keep out of her way.

From the ashes of LADY FALLS, Raven Wells is transformed into Lady Serena Wellcott. Now with wealth and power all her own, she is the founder of the Black Rose-a secret society dedicated to securing justice for women who have been abused or wronged in the private corridors of Victorian society. She has dedicated her life to revenge, honing her skills at the bequest of others but biding her time until she has the two men she loathes most in this world in her sights.

Sir Phillip Warrick has scars of his own from their fateful encounter years before and his heart has never healed from the loss of his beautiful Raven and the irrevocable mistake of brutally ending their affair. But when he found no trace of her, he let himself believe that she was dead. Except Phillip isn't that lucky. When he is introduced to Lady Serena Wellcott at his cousin's country home, his world begins to implode. Because once again he has a tigress by the tail, except this time, it's a dangerous mix of passion and poison when it becomes clear that what the lady wants most is his head on a platter. If only he didn't still love her with every fiber of his being...

In a dance of desire, Serena has her own struggles reconciling the man she once loved with the irresistible rake she has vowed to hate. Vengeance is its own mistress and it's a race to the finish as the Black Rose takes on a quest to carve out justice and find mercy even where it's been forgotten. Love may rule but Lady Serena Wellcott doesn't believe in playing fairly and she also doesn't believe in surrender.

In lieu of my normal review I am instead posting this as an open letter to the mastermind of the “Black Rose” trilogy…RENEE BERNARD. Dear, dear Renee, Are you trying to drive me as mad as the Hatter? First you lure me in with what appears at first to be a sweet love story with hints of revenge until the ending of LADY FALLS turns that assumption smoothly on its ear and left me begging to find out what would happen next. Now, as Raven’s story picks up in LADY RISES we see how the events of the past have shaped her into a new woman with a new name…and a new purpose. As the prevailing force of vengeance for wronged women as the Black Rose, Raven has become a woman to be reckoned with in a big way. “YOU GO GIRL” I cheered (mentally, of course, so as not to frighten the neighbors). When her newest mission puts her back in the path of her once beloved and badly-wronged-by, Philipp, I knew that before everything was said and done the Sh…poop, would hit the fan. But then, you had to go and make me like him again. Although he hasn’t quite been redeemed yet, you did make me see more into his point of view and understand how despite it all Raven could still have feelings for the man. BUT THEN, you dropped another bomb and left me hanging on the edge of my seat again. Clumps of hair wore lost, fingernails demolished…the straight jacket was not far away, at one point, after I tapped my screen a dozen or more times hoping the next chapter would magically appear! Although I have to hand it to you, the outcome of Raven’s Black Rose mission was pretty spectacularly played and she gave new meaning to “Dramatic Exit” following a very emotional confession, but you are killing me with the cliffhangers! It’s definitely a love-hate relationship I’m having with this series, but since you can’t ask for a more exciting and emotionally charged story as this has been, the love part wins out every time. I can’t wait to read the thrilling conclusion when LADY TRIUMPHS brings this epic saga to an end, but I can already tell you that I will miss Raven when her story is done. Giving KUDOS where kudos are due, Ms. Bernard…personal insanity aside, the Black Rose trilogy is truly a masterpiece!

In Book 2 of the Black Rose trilogy, Lady Rises continues the story of Raven Wells, a woman who has now come into her own. The story does not pick up where Lady Falls ends but as the story progresses, more details are revealed of what happened after  Lady Falls. The author, Renee Bernard, weaves the mystery of Raven Wells into a carefully crafted story of female justice. Sir Phillip  Warrick returns as does the heated attraction to Raven, who has now ‘come into her own’.  But will love conquer all?  Lady Rises is  a must-read to find the answer.  An intriguing plot plus excellent characters equal a truly good read.  Lady Falls, Book 1 of the trilogy, is a must-read before forging on to Book 2.  [ARC received for review]   @ReneeBernard  #LadyRises  #theblackrose

EPIC TRANSFORMATION---MUST READ Lady Rises is the much anticipated follow up to Lady Falls. After reading this book TWICE I was left with the feeling of WOW that book had a lot of suspense. My heart raced while reading book one--while reading Lady Rises my heart must have been sprinting the Kentucky Derby due to the suspense. I absolutely loved it. The transformation of Rave Wells is epic and I cannot wait to see what happens in the third book. The supporting cast is amazing. Pepper is my hero. Drama, love, suspense, angst, comedy this book has it all. I cannot wait for the third book in this series.

I got to one of the select few who received an ARC of this wonderful book and I can say I was so happy to see what happened to Raven and Phillip. But now Raven is not Raven anymore. After seven years she has reinvented herself into Lady Serena Wellcot and has created a society that helps women. I was so impressed with her and how she has carried herself and didn't let Trent or Phillip get the best of her. I was wondering how she was going to react to seeing Phillip at his cousin's house but she did wonderfully. She is still as determined and brilliant as ever and I am starting to like Phillip again but he has a long way to go before he is back in Serena's good graces and I can't blame her one bit. I was left with my jaw hanging again with how it ended but I know that Renee won't leave us hanging for long. I want to know if Raven/Serena finally forgives Phillip and if Trent gets eaten by fire ants after being drowned in a hill of honey.  He deserves death for what he did or some type of awesome revenge. Thanks again Renee for another great read and can't wait for the third and final installment of the Black Rose Trilogy.

WOW! WOW! WOW!! I just finished the second installment in this series, the first being Lady Falls, and I have to say I was on pins and needles the whole time. Raven, now Lady Serena, has come a long way in the 7 years since the first book took place. At first I wasn't sure I liked her, although she was very likable in Lady Falls, she seemed so cold and unbending. Then, after being introduced to the Black Rose Society, you realize what she has seen and done during five of those past seven years and how it must have changed her. I don't want to give any spoilers so enough said about the Society! Still can't help but like Phillip. He made a HUGE mistake at the end of Lady Falls and has been paying for it ever since, not knowing if the woman he loves is alive or dead, and if she's dead, blaming himself. I have to say that Renee Bernard is the new Queen of the Cliffhanger!! Holy Cow! The last two pages of Lady Rises really pack a whopper. I actually was left with the token mouth hanging open frantically tapping my Kindle for the next page...yes, it's that good!Phillip is still the lovable rake that is trying to make amends to Serena and you can't help but fall just a little bit in love with his character....I do have to say there are a few cringe worthy moments involving The Black Rose (one is told in a story and the other happens as you read) that you can't help wincing over but they fit the story are aren't very graphic.I'm not sure that Lady Rises can be read as a 'stand alone' book. Yes, it has it's own story completely separate from Lady Falls, but the Phillip/Raven/Serena story is a continuation. I personally would read it as a series.  All that being said, this is the second book in a series of three. The first, Lady Falls, is a must read, not only because it introduces you to it's fabulous characters, but it's just a great story, again lots of action and a phenomenal cliff hanger. The third being Lady Triumphs will be released August 2014. I can't wait for Lady Triumphs...Really looking forward to seeing how the Queen of Cliffhangers wraps up the tale of Phillip and it will be spectacular!
