First, I have to say that Leadership 2.0 is the best leadership book to come along in quite some time. The 22 skills it teaches are critical to leadership success and the book really goes the extra mile to show you how you can apply them. The authors undertook a massive research study to determine which leadership skills enable outstanding performance and it's a real value for leaders to understand these skills. The book is novel in its approach as well, because it includes a passcode so that you can go online and take a leadership self-test. This test shows how you score in each of the 22 skills taught in the book, and your test report analyzes your scores to pick the strategies in the book that will increase your leadership skills the most. As you learn each leadership skill, you get to see descriptions of real people that illustrate what the skill looks like in action and what it looks like when a leader is lacking in the skill. I saw a lot of myself in these descriptions. Each chapter then goes on to provide strategies for applying the skill you are learning about to improve yourself as a leader. The book is jammed full of strategies (I lost count at 100) and they are really powerful. The book (and its leadership model) have two sections: CORE LEADERSHIP These are the skills that are the building blocks of effective leadership. Things like strategic thinking, vision, mobilizing others, and getting results. Though these skills have been known to be important for some time, the authors provide a fresh take that is enlightening. They also provide numerous strategies that I found really helpful for improving my ability in these skills. ADAPTIVE LEADERSHIP These are the skills that separate the good leaders from the great ones, and they are skills that some leaders go their entire careers without adopting them. They are Emotional Intelligence, Organizational Justice, Character, and Development (both yourself and others). You access the test via a passcode provided in a sealed envelope in the back of the book. The test took me about 20 minutes to complete, and it asked me about 70 questions related to my behavior at work. In some areas my results confirmed things I already knew about myself, but most of the feedback was really powerful in increasing my self-awareness as a leader. The test results opened my eyes to skills that I should be focusing on more and fine-tuning. Since many of the skills the book teaches are new to me, I found the most room for improvement in these areas. What's really great about the test is it guides you through which skills to work on and it even points you to the strategies in the book that will help you to improve the most in your need areas. If you want to receive feedback from others on your leadership skills, you can also upgrade the test (for a fee) and it will integrate their feedback into your results report. This is a cool feature and I plan on using it. I've only had the book for a few days now, but it's already making an impact upon my leadership abilities and, most importantly, how I approach the people that work for me. If this effect continues with time, then this book is worth its weight in gold.
