This book is a must have if you're serious about drawing and being an artist. I own Juliette's other two books and find them invaluable if you desire classic instruction and don't have access to public studios or teaching of this caliber. The included DVD (1hr 20min) is very well done and shows close-up instruction of Juliette doing actual drawings of still lifes and live models from many different angles.

Living in an area where access to formal art instruction is very limited I have had to rely on books. This book is a must-have for anyone who wants to learn how to draw. Juliette Aristides walks you step by step through the drawing process. This book focuses on classical drawing techniques. I have several drawing books that promised that I would be able to draw after following their techniques. While I did see some improvement in my finished drawings, I'm still struggling through the drawing process. This book explains the entire drawing process-how to see things like an artist, how to start a drawing and measurements for accuracy.

I purchased this book after taking some Figure Drawing classes at my local Art Students League. I found it to be both inspirational and enlightening. "Classical" is the operative word here and rather than reinvent the wheel, you will learn to think about drawing like the masters did. It is oriented mostly toward figure drawing and there is a lot of depth to the information contained in this book, so it is one I plan to read again and again. It is a book to grow with. By this, I mean that, as your drawing abilities improve, you will gain more insight with each reading. I don't think I could have understood many of the concepts and terminology in this book had I not taken some drawing classes first. But it is a fantastic learning companion for those who understand fundamental drawing concepts. I would say of all the books that I have read on the subject, this is the best and most comprehensive. In this book, Juliette Aristides, has completely captured the essentials of classical drawing. It is a must have for those interested in a classical approach to drawing.

Aristides' book is a little esoteric. Like Anthony Rider's book, it's better for the more advanced student than the beginner. Some of the concepts about drawing can be a little inaccessible until you've had more experience; less experienced artists might feel a little overwhelmed. She includes examples from some of the best artists of our day. However, the emphasis on atelier drawing sometimes sacrifices expressive qualities to academic qualities.
