Never Too Late for True Love After 30 years of active duty service, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Tom Baxter, retired. Having reached a crossroads in life, he signed up for Madame Eve’s 1-Night Stand service. Luke Dexter, first seen in Once Her Man, Always Her Man, and subsequent books in the “Always a Marine” series, encouraged him to go through with the date, per his own, very successful match with Rebecca. After grieving for those same 30 years, the heroine, Brenda Connors, had a recent health scare and was ready to try something different. Madame Eve matched the two for a New Year’s Eve date in Lest Old Marines Be Forgot. Tom and Brenda lived rich lives, had fulfilling careers and wonderful friendships. However, they both sought something different – a deeper, personal connection through their 1-Night Stand. Over the course of a few hours, years of loneliness were peeled away as they became acquainted. Natural, comfortable conversation, with a strong undercurrent of attraction, provided the backdrop for their budding romance, which lacked the artifice of youthful liaisons. Together they began the New Year, by setting a new course for their lives. An impassioned, flirtatious, steamy, sexy new course. With the popularity of the New Adult genre, characters who had reached middle age, were been largely ignored, unfortunately. Lest Old Marines Be Forgot proved yet again, that Heather Long’s talents lie in creating multi-layered, real characters, who are richer because of their age and experiences, not in spite of them. Lest Old Marines Be Forgot was the fitting, emotional ending to Ms. Long’s 2013 holiday collection, this year. Portions of this, and the other short stories in the collection, will benefit “Toys for Tots.” Please buy this book and give it to your friends, to help the US Marine Corps with this worthwhile cause.
Lest Old Marines Be Forgot is Book 5 in the Always a Marine Holiday Series and the 1Night Stand Series. Tom Baxter is retiring from the Marines. He has no family as the Corps has been his whole life. For New Year’s Eve he fills out the Application for Madame Eve’s website. Brenda Connors has always celebrated New Year’s Eve alone (since the Marine that she loved died on New Year’s 30 years ago). Her friend encourages her to sign up with Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand. Brenda does not think it will work but then she gets the call that her 1Night Stand is scheduled for New Year’s Eve. Can Tom and Brenda find in each other what is missing from their lives? It was refreshing to have a story about a middle age couple finding love and finding their way.
