Overview

Vincent fidgeted as he waited in the ten-items-or-less lane for he clearly had more than ten items in his basket. As the line of impatient shoppers grew, he was sure he'd be humiliated for the sin of supermarket disobedience. Frozen Cornish-hens were sure to be launched at his large frame. If only he knew he'd be visiting the afterlife after being hit by a car in the parking lot, he would've checked his anxiety attack at the customer service counter.

As Vincent's spirit rose above his mangled body, so too did each of his grocery items. Each item told a remarkable and embarrassing memory from his past, as his life flashed before his eyes based on those items. He was forced to examine his current state of unhappiness as he awaited the answers to the questions: Would his life end in the parking lot of his favorite grocer? Was he accurate in the belief that heaven was non-existent?

About the Author

Michael Evanichko began to write at a very young age. Inspired by the early works of Stephen King and the schlocky horror and suspense books of the eighties, he attempted his first novel at age twelve. It wasn't until much later in life that he actually completed his first novel, Life in a Supermarket Basket. Life in a Savage Landfill, and Life in a Neon Knapsack soon followed, and his "Trilogy of Life" was completed. Each novel is connected by a character and is unique in its tone and story.

Each chapter is named after one of the grocery items, and begins with an illustration that foreshadows the events within the chapter. Life in a Supermarket Basket creates an environment completely relatable to a mainstream audience. Who hasn’t tried to sneak through the express lane with more items than allowed? Are heaven and the afterlife for real? And finally, we all have poignant food memories that piece our lives together like a puzzle.

This author is a genuine storyteller; each chapter of Vincent's life stood as its own complete and well-rounded plot. The clever, dry wit and self-deprecating tone made Vincent very relatable, and you'll easily find yourself laughing and crying as his most embarrassing and touching moments are replayed for you to enjoy. I am definitely expecting many more great stories from this author in the future.

I loved this book!! The concept is very clever and kept my attention the whole way through. I thoroughly enjoyed how you kept jumping back and forth to different times in Vincent's life. I also found that I enjoyed the spiritual aspect of the book, even though I am not, myself, a spiritual person. I related to this book on so many levels and I am so sad that I have finished it. What a great debut from Michael Evanichko! Do yourself a favor and purchase or ASAP!!

This debut by Mike Evanichko - a multi-talented actor, writer, and friend - was extremely entertaining. It's like nothing I've ever read before - a "food anthology" of sorts, with groceries inspiring memories of significant life events in a young man named Vince who is dying in a parking lot after being hit by a car during a high-speed police chase.



In this unusual collection, each item in Vince's supermarket basket serves as a talisman to discover both superficial and profound truths about Vince's history, struggles, and triumphs, leading to a conclusion that is very satisfying. Although the interludes between stories sometimes seems a bit forced, and the wry Everyman voice of the narrator at the beginning of the book is a bit stilted and self-conscious, both the interludes and the narrator's personality become much more natural and likeable as the stories proceed. Through Vince's memories, we learn how situations involving mundane items such as hamburger, grapes, lip balm, pork chops, soy milk, and other everyday events, objects, and experiences, can add up to a sometimes touching and extraordinary "ordinary" life.
