Lise Meitner (1878–1968) forschte und lehrte über dreißig Jahre lang an der Seite Otto Hahns. Als Erste begriff die bescheidene Physikerin die volle Bedeutung eines scheinbar misslungenen Forschungsprojekts, an dem sie bis zu ihrer erzwungenen Flucht 1938 mitgearbeitet hatte: Sie deutete das Ergebnis als Kernspaltung. Am Wettlauf um die Freisetzung der Kernenergie, der dadurch ausgelöst wurde, beteiligte sie sich nicht.
