I enjoyed this picture book story of feisty Lizzie and soulful Lou Seal, her blow-up beach toy. It had just the right amount of suspense when I read it out loud and perfectly evoked what a day at the beach is like, something that leads to lots of fun discussions with kids. The story is satisfying and the pictures are scrumptious: bold colors, different perspectives and detail. Patricia Keeler really conveys all the beach sights and sounds perfectly. I especially enjoyed the sea gulls that observe Lizzie and Lou Seal throughout the story . I also loved that Lou Seal was an imaginary friend who every now and then almost came to life in the artwork. So well done. I highly recommend it!

This book so elegantly and simply portrays a summertime beach through the actions of a little girl. Lizzie loves her flip-flops and the sounds she makes as she stomps out of her trailer, over the boardwalk, across the sand and down to the water's edge. Most of all, she loves her blow-up pal, Lou Seal. Lizzie takes Lou Seal with her everywhere. Trouble occurs when Lizzie loses her flip-flops--and Lou Seal loses his air. What to do? Read how Lizzie solves both problems on her own. Something, little girls and their parents will truly enjoy. The illustrations are beautiful. You can practically feel your feet crunching in the gritty sand, as well as the spray from the lively waves splashing onto the shore. The perfect beach book!
When I was a kid, I had numerous favorite books that I've since had much fun reading to my grandchildren. So I set out to find a new one to read to them in hopes of discovering a gem to add to their growing lists of books they will someday read to their own grandkids. This is a really cute book. I absolutely love the watercolor illustrations in this one – especially of the cherubic Lizzie in her striped swimsuit – my little sister had one of those. Well, this girl loves to eat chocolate chip cookies, too, I'll bet – just look at how darling she is! She caused me to think in so many ways of my little sis that the book had me reminiscing with pleasure as I turned each page. I traveled back in time to the endless summers we spent at the nearby seashore. Anyway, all the grandkids loved it, and it has been added to our family's list of favorites. Maybe I enjoyed it even more than they did. And I've shared it with my sister to read to her grandkids – she thinks I resemble Lou Seal...
