Ana Dee is one of the most beautifully empathetic characters I have come across in my most recent reading history and is the perfect protagonist to lead Adria Cruz Tabor's Love's Rebirth. Ana Dee has a tragic past that Tabor depicts with raw honesty and an upbringing that provides the hope a reader needs to see in a young woman we want to root for as she comes of age. I got a genuine sense of what 19th-century Texas was like from the refreshing point of view of someone who is not a cowboy. The world looks different through the eyes of a woman of color and Tabor paints it subtly alongside Ana Dee's growing awareness of social disparity, such as slavery. At its heart, the story is a romance, but in its soul, it is a multi-faceted reflection of the experiences that resonate through generations, and it captured my own heart in the process. Very highly recommended.

The burgeoning village of Santo Tomás in the Tejas region of Mexico—an area the local Anglos already call Texas, before statehood—developed as a trading center for ranchers, and it features a harmonious collection of cultures and ethnicities. In 1831, Ana Dolores Peregrino’s family of Spanish and Indigenous heritage was slaughtered during a raid by Comanche warriors on their countryside hacienda outside the village. The only survivors were 2-year-old Ana Dolores and her great-grandmother, Braulia. They were brought to Santo Tomás to live with Dr. Anthony Moore and his wife, Catherine, and their child, Elizabeth. In 1844, 15-year-old Ana Dee, as she’s now known, works as a nurse in Dr. Moore’s clinic when young Texas Ranger Robert Hughes brings in an injured mother and child. Ana Dee immediately feels a mystical connection to this “man in blue”—“When his fingers touched her, she felt a light current rush up her arm”—who turns out to be a spiritual seeker who informs Ana Dee that her town is being protected by ancient “wise beings.” Although they meet twice again over the next two days, Tabor is not about to let her protagonist settle down so quickly. Instead, this charming fantasy sends Robert and Ana Dee on complicated journeys—Ana Dee, for instance, is revealed to have inherited “spiritual gifts” that she’s just beginning to understand—before their lives intersect again. The narrative features a large cast of engaging secondary characters, and it’s filled with the bright colors and traditions of Santo Tomás’ various heritages. The story isn’t without tragedy, but Tabor has created, in the novel’s setting, a small haven of religious and cultural tolerance that’s ahead of its time. The gentle, fairy-tale simplicity of the prose and storyline are appropriate for YA readers, but its wistful, enchanting optimism will likely be enjoyed by readers of any age.

An entertaining, escapist read with an intriguing spiritual core.
