The illustrations in this book are wonderful. You probably enjoy it a lot more if you have Michigan ties, but as an adult I fell in love with it, and my daughters felt the same

This nonfiction picture book presents information about the state of Michigan in a manner that the youngest readers can understand. It does not have characters, but instead presents 26 different Michigan "characters" through the 26 letters of the alphabet. It also does not have a plot, but instead moves across Michigan's landscape and history through varied "characters"; the plot could be construed as a history of Michigan, though. It is set in the state of Michigan, and its theme is the living history of Michigan through rhymes and informational facts. It is in the style of an ABC book, with each page containing its own letter - and some letters taking up 2 pages. The illustrations appear to be painted. The cultural markers are on every page - the entire book is about the cultural markers of the state of Michigan! In a Michigan elementary school - a predominantly White elementary school - I would include this book. However, it doesn't include much diversity, or represent other ethnic groups besides the WASP culture.

So, I will admit right now that I will automatically have a bias towards loving this book because I am a Michigan boy - born and raised. I feel like with every page of this book I can stop and musing or converse for hours about the significance of each component of this alphabet. Considering this as children's literature, it would be a wonderful book to explore with dialogue between young peers who live in Michigan. The same could be true for any alphabet book that involves a state or other place of origin/region.

This book is a great book to read to students when they are learning about the state of Michigan! It is a great read from A-Z of different places and things that are found all over the state of Michigan. It also talks about the people that are from Michigan who have done great things for the country. In the back of the book is has a questionnaire of fun facts about the state of Michigan. Students can relate to this book by the places they have been to or heard about.

I bought this book actually as an idea for a wedding guestbook, because the groom is from MI. The art through the pages is outstanding and it is a precious read. We aren't going to use it for the wedding but we are keeping it for our kids =)

I have bought this book as a gift many times. I have sent it to Thailand, as a baby gift, to share the state that the Mother had visited while working with me. I have given it as a going away present for a young child as they were moving to another state, to remind them of their days in Michigan. I have placed it in gift baskets for vistors with children from out of town, so they can enjoy learning about the state they are visting. I also have taken it as a gift to other countries as a token of something personal from my homeland. It is a fun book and can be enjoyed by almost any age. I even learned things about the State that I was probably taught in school, but had forgotten.

I have purchased this book for every toddler I know. My boyfriend's nephew is 2 and ABSOLUTLY loves it. He has to read it every night before he goes to bed! There is more detailed history and information for the kids to read as they get older too! I recommend this book as a must have for every kid growing up in Michigan (heck, I learned a lot about Michigan the first time I read it too - and I have lived here for 30 years!!!)

M is for Michigan is a wonderful way to introduce your children to things they need to know about Michigan! There are also other books in this 'series' that help to introduce your child (and yourself) to other states. The illustrations are superb! You will also enjoy the book titles listed below. These books all are illustrated by Michael Glenn Monroe and are bright, colorful and visually intriguing. Happy Reading!

This is a very inventive way to show young children all Michigan has to offer. Older readers may find the poetry a little too childish, but overall this book will work for all ages.
