Having never used Mac previous to buying a MacBook Pro, we purchased this book, along with MacBook Pro portable genius. The dummies book is where I start to look when I want to know how to do something, the genius book is more complete and comprehensive. Between the two, we have been able to get over the hump and are now certified Apple freaks. Probably will be ditching my Microsoft based desktop next year and become a totally Apple based household. Like most "Dummies" books, it is a little short on content but long on organization.

Are you a laptop owner? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Mark L. Chambers Nancy C. Muir, has written the 6th edition of an outstanding book for himselfand, for every other Apple laptop owner who wants to become a laptop techno-wizard. Author Chambers, begins by introducing you to the hardware and all of the major parts of the Mac laptop. The author also familiarizes you with the initial chores you need to complete before settling in with your favorite applications. Then, he continues by introducing you to the basic elements of the El Capitan Desktop, and the resources available if you need help with OS X. The author then describes the new features that ship with the latest version of OS X. Next, he discusses the System Preferences window and the most commonly used settings within it. In addition, the author shows you how to use Spotlight like a MacBook power guru. He also demonstrates how you can remind, note, notify, and map like a mobile power user! Next, the author shows you how to use Safari. In addition, he researches all of the benefits of iCloud. Then, the author continues by showing you all of the step-by-step procedures, explanations, and tips to help you build a safe multiuser MacBook that’s accessible to everyone with clean hands. He then fills you in on all of the details you need to know to get MacBook hooked up to a new network. Next, the author leads you through all of the features of iTunes. In addition, he walks you through an overview of what Photos can do. Then, the author continues by showing you how to take stock of the iMovie window. He then explains everything you need to know to create your first song with GarageBand. Next, the author shows you how to set your inner designer free from the tedious constraints of word processing with desktop publishing with Pages! Then, he continues by demonstrating how the Numbers spreadsheet program can help you organize data and analyze important financial decisions for home and businesseverything from a household budget to your company’s sales statistics! The author then demonstrates how simple it is to build a stunning Keynote presentation. Next, he gives you a crash course in the logical puzzle that is computer troubleshooting: the art of finding out What Needs Fixing. Then, the author continues by describing what you can add to the innards of your computer; as well as, how to get inside there if you work up the courage to go exploring. He then demonstrates how you can make good use of every byte of storage space provided by your drive. Next, the author reminds you of ten of the most important rules every laptop owner should follow to prevent chaos and carnage while traveling. Finally, he fills in what you need to avoid like the plague. Each chapter in this excellent book is a reference for a specific hardware or software topic. In other words, you can begin reading this great book anywhere you like, because each chapter is self-contained.
