Overview

Maggi is an excellent adventurer, a pretty good songwriter, an aspiring scientist, and Milo's best friend. Milo is a Border Collie, and he's very smart.  When Maggi gets a book about frogs from her grandma, naturally, she decides to take Milo to find frogs the very next day.  But it turns out that catching frogs is hard work. Lucky for Maggi, Milo is there to help. And lucky for Milo, even though Maggi’s not the world’s best frog hunter, she’s the kind of friend who makes everything a little more fun.

With the spunk of Ladybug Girl and an illustration style suggestive of Charles Schulz, Maggi and Milo are an irresistible pair with a whole lot of charm.

About the Author

Juli Brenning worked briefly in magazine publishing before getting her teaching certificate. She now lives outside of Nashville, Tennessee with her husband, two kids, an ill-mannered dog, and a very fat cat. Maggi and Milo is her first book.

Priscilla Burris graduated from The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising. Since then, she's illustrated several children's books. She lives in Southern California.

A package from the girl's grandmother containing a book about frogs and some blue polka-dotted rubber boots inspires their frog-hunting adventure. A careful look at Maggi's bedroom reveals froggy slippers, a toy frog, and several frog drawings, which help to explain the mysterious present. "I am frog hunter…and he is Milo!" she shouts as they run to the pond, eager for the hunt. After waiting "a million minutes" for some action, she becomes bored, and her sidekick wanders off. A panicked search for the wayward pooch finds him-and a frog-in the pond. As Milo continues to forge in the muck and locate more and more frogs, the inventive girl names them "Alexander…Benjamin…Cooper…Daniel…." At the end of the day, "Side by side, they sat on the edge of the world, just listening to the frogs say good night." What do you need for a frog hunt? Big polka-dot boots, a book about frogs and one giant border collie best friend. Maggi, a wisp of a girl with spindly legs and a large, wobbly head, is an excellent adventurer. She can't wait to try out her new boots and search the pond for frogs. After a good night's rest—and imparting forbiddingly specific instructions to her brother at the breakfast table ("Please keep the chitchat to a minimum. I'm in a hurry!")—Maggi and her shaggy sidekick, Milo, are ready. However, after waiting "a million minutes" (or three) in the water, they haven't found a single frog. With shoulders slumped and head bent low, Maggi declares frog hunting to be capital B-O-R-I-N-G. Until…Milo finds a frog! And another. And another. After 16 frogs total, Maggi and Milo rest. (Frog hunting is hard work.) As the sun sets and the palette changes to a dusky blue, the frogs quietly croak "good night" to their new friends. Debut author Brenning has created a charming duo; Milo's steadfast loyalty (and joyful, lolling tongue, courtesy of Burris) fully balances Maggi's quirky proclivities.
