Overview

About the Author

Dr. Mary Lundeberg, for- mer Professor and Chair of the Education Department at Michigan State University, holds degrees in K-12 teaching and educational psychology and has authored several books. Dr. Lundeberg is an award-winning nature photographer who has traveled the globe to study and photograph wildlife, in particular the nurturing behavior of animals with their young. She has made the study of monarch butterflies, their habits and habitats a long-term commitment and she raises and observes monarchs in the garden surrounding her home in Englewood, Florida.

Magical Monarch's Journey fills a huge gap in the life cycle literature. I believe children need to be exposed to and inspired by the wonders of our planet so that ultimately they will want to be caregivers. There is no better way to inspire young learners than telling a rich story. In this case, Mary has presented a true journey tale with such photographic and prose detail that readers and listeners can imagine the long monarch's journey in which she copes with varied weather conditions and meets a deer, geese, hummingbirds and even a bear! The children, with whom I have shared this book, wanted to revisit the beautiful detailed photos again and again. In contrast to other life cycle books, in Magical Monarch's Journey, we experience more than an identification of the life phases of the insect. We hear a true tale of the interdependence of these creatures with other life forms on our planet. Although the challenges to the monarch butterfly are identified making this also suitable for older readers, there is a message of hope through the perspective of Mary's granddaughter who has a plan of planting milkweed for the magical creatures. I recommend this as an engaging journey tale and science teaching resource for elementary and middle school children, as well as a resource for teacher educators.
