Although this book starts out with the disclaimer that it is meant not to be a scholarly work, but solely for enjoyment, it does contain some egregious errors that make the reader wonder if any part is accurate. Within the first few pages, the author confuses the Middle Ages and the Dark Ages several times (very different time periods), and propagates the old, now refuted, myth that spices were used to disguise meat that had "gone off." Of course, if one could afford spices, which were generally more expensive by weight than gold, one was rich enough not to have to eat spoiled meat! That being said, if you take it all with a grain of salt (ahem), it's an amusing way to spend a rainy afternoon.
