No American can fail to be highly entertained by the witty observations of them written by famed Scottish author, Thomas Hamilton. Visiting America in 1830, Hamilton was well-versed in the history, culture, and famous men of the former colonies.

But what he found was a country that was like no other of the many he had visited. He liked, was bemused by, and was slightly appalled by some Americans. But overall, he very much enjoyed his visit with a people separated from him only by language.
