I have not read the novel, I listened to the abridged Audio CD read by Francis Barber. It was a shame the CD was abridged, I'd have liked to have heard the full version, but in spite of that, I enjoyed the tale of a young teacher plunged for the first time into a deprived, poverty stricken area of Birmingham. There was interesting information about the early Communist movement and its attempts to improve the lot for the workers who were being exploited by their employers. The descriptions of life in poverty were powerful and the children were wonderful. In the audio version some of the accents were a bit annoying and some of the characters came over as a bit twee, where they may not have done had I read the novel. My first Audio Book and an interesting experience, will be on the lookout for more.
