Our tale begins when Charlie, a bitter, retired, widower, decides to break the monotony of sitting in his home office to make a day trip on the St Johns River in his prized canoe. To keep boaters, on the river, from checking on him as he drifts along the waterway, he takes a rod and reel with him. He made arrangements with his one good friend, John, to pick him up at 5 PM, at their normal rendezvous place, Blue Springs State Park.
