I fell in love with this book from the first sentence. "I swear that body was hard as a rock when my butt bounced off it." With an opening line like that, you know you're in for a fun ride. Jo is a thirty-ish woman with an interest in sleuthing. She has no qualms about putting her nose where it might not belong. I loved her self-confidence in her PI skills while at the same time felt her vulnerability as an overweight woman longing to return to the shape she used to be. The other characters in the book are just as colorful. There is mystery, humor, and fun subplots (a sister determined to home school her less-than-enthusiastic kids, a mother with a penchant for potty humor, humorous weight-loss attempts). I have only read one Janet Evanovich novel, but I think Murder Under Construction is in a similar vein to the Plum series, only I enjoyed this book more. The writing is sharp, fast-paced, and breezy. The perfect book for when you want a simple, entertaining escape. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

This books was funny at times, but lacked a lot of character development. I didn't feel I wanted to invest in follow up books.

I enjoyed the humor, and the clues piqued my interest in trying to solve the crime. I did not guess whodunit, which, to me, means it's well thought out.

Story held together. Jo needs to learn to keep thoughts under wraps.

Don't expect this to be a deep, dark mystery but if you're looking for a fun, easy read this is for you. The characters are just that, characters, and there are some terrifically hilarious situations. All in all a very enjoyable read.

Liked the characters, good plot but too many descriptions of bodily functions.

If you're looking for a fun, light mystery, you'll enjoy this. It's fast and easy to read, and the mystery is intriguing. The characters are fairly shallowly developed but entertaining. The one thing I really didn't like was the main character, Jo Ravens, solves the mystery almost entirely from "clues" she gets from dreams she has. It's too contrived and a cop out for solving the mystery. If the author doesn't resort to this same trick in other books in the series, I might be interested in reading them. JB

I like thrillers but not always want an intense read. This was a great vacation read. I couldn't wait to read each chapter. Very enjoyable and funny as well.

Loved it. Clean, few cuss words but admonished. Just a sprinkle of romance. A good light read for a rainy weekend.

The writing was good, but not very original. Reminded me too much of Stephanie Plum books. I don't think Jo's a good detective if she gets hints from the paranormal. I prefer to read how someone actually solves a case on her own. P.S. Also wondering if the author is taking a dig at Douglas Preston, the author of many excellent books. Can't imagine why since he's on a totally different level when it comes to writing and researching.
