My Childhood, Learning to Keep The White Space: My autobiograph on becoming an artist

My Childhood, Learning to Keep The White Space: My autobiography is my childhood story growing up on a small quarter horse ranch. Because of a learning disorder, I still could not read at 10 years old. With the help of a librarian, I discovered a book of Rembrandt art. When I arrived home I found a book of art by C.M. Russell and in a short time became convinced if I could read, C.M.Russell was telling me how to draw and paint in his letters, so I wanted to learn to read.

Reading my Autobiography to 3rd and 4th-grade classes has been a great joy. The children laugh out loud and ask the best questions. I have shared a lifestyle that is no longer experienced and the children learn a lot from my book.

About the Author

I grew up on a small quarter horse ranch in Tulsa, OK with a full-fledged cowboy daddy. Much of my childhood was spent sketchbook in hand in the front seat of a '54 Chevy pickup truck at the closest calf roping. Through that pickup windshield I developed a love for art and animals while watching sights common to a neighboring town's rodeo: a black and white collie working the roping calves, a horse being saddled, the barn cat chasing a mouse, a flat tire being changed on the trailer while the good ole horse stood tied. The value of art, for me, is all about brightening life. I want my art to be inspirational to the viewer, an opportunity to provoke a smile and at times cause a belly laugh that clings to a memory. My time spent painting and teaching come from wanting my art to raise joy in people's lives.
