Overview

Not to be confused with the similarly-titled collections on the President and Hallmark labels ("The Very Thought of You" was Bowlly's signature ballad), this 22-track compilation draws from all of the African-born, British-based big band singer's tragically-shortened career. What's most interesting about this set is that it contains not only tunes from Bowlly's celebrated stints with various big bands, most notably the Ray Noble Orchestra, with whom he recorded most of his best work, but also rarer sides recorded with smaller groups like The Novelty Orchestra. The results show not only Bowlly's incredible skill with ballads (he could sing the most sentimental lyrics without coming off sappy), but also the side of his musical personality influenced by music hall patter songs and novelties, such as "Night on the Desert." The sound quality is somewhat variable, but the material is mostly first-rate.
