Purpose: The purpose is to describe commonly used testing maneuvers and how to perform each test properly.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is targeted primarily at residents in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as other healthcare professionals who evaluate and treat patients with disorders of the neurological and musculoskeletal systems. It is most appropriate for students and residents early in training, and it also would be useful for more senior residents and attendings as a quick reference to refresh their knowledge about specific maneuvers or scales.
Features: The first of the book's two sections reviews commonly performed physical examination tests for the musculoskeletal system, and is organized by body part. Each test includes the purpose, verbal and pictorial description of how to perform it, positive test findings, sensitivity and specificity, and reference sources. The second section reviews neurological tests and scales, such as stroke outcomes, Glasgow coma scale, and return to play guidelines after concussion. References are also included for further reading. Many of the tests and scales are described in table format.
Assessment: This pocket-sized book can be used by students, residents, and clinicians for quick reference to facilitate thorough examination of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The first half of the book, detailing physical examination maneuvers, is well organized and would be easy to use in a busy clinical setting. The ample illustrations of each examination maneuver are especially useful to ensure proper testing. Although this book would not be used as a primary source for rehabilitation studies, it is a practical adjunct in the clinical setting. It would be useful for individuals early in training who may be less familiar or comfortable with musculoskeletal examination tests and neurological scales.
