Never Forget (Beacons of Hope Series #5) by Jody Hedlund

Rose Island Lighthouse, Rhode Island

June 1880

Will she betray his trust to stay on the island she loves?

Abbie Watson is content to spend her days clamming, crabbing, and tending Rose Island Lighthouse. Her grandpa is the head light keeper, but his senility may lead to their eviction. Since leaving the island would kill her beloved Gramps, Abbie will do anything to keep him in the one place he knows and loves.

Wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop III’s wild living has gained him a reputation as the ‘bad boy’ among the elite social circles of Newport. After a blow to the head in a yachting accident washes him up on Rose Island, Nathaniel has no memories of his past.

Abbie tends the wounded stranger in her home only to realize he assumes they’re married. Although she knows she needs to correct Nathaniel’s mistake, his presence calms Gramps and provides a way to prevent eviction from the lighthouse.

The longer the charade continues, the harder it gets for Abbie to tell Nathaniel the truth, more so as she begins to fall in love. Everyone she’s ever loved has abandoned her. Will Nathaniel leave her too, once he discovers he’s not really her husband?

**NOTE: Never Forget is Book 5 in the Beacons of Hope series but can be read as a standalone novel.

Boy, does this story give its characters quite a dilemma! I was initially disappointed in Abbie's choice to deceive Nathaniel, and was surprised that she easily dismissed any concern for his family. However as she got to know Nathaniel she started exhibiting more feelings of conflict over her decision and taking his happiness into consideration. I admired Nathaniel's thoughtful insights and determination to use his second chance at life to become a better man. He developed a relationship with Abbie's Gramps and treated him compassionately, which spoke to his true character. There was strong romantic chemistry between Abbie and Nathaniel; he appreciated Abbie's strength and inner beauty, while Abbie realized that the goodness and kindness of Nathaniel showed how different he was from her former husband. The threats from a rival lightkeeper and a looming deadline kept the tension high as Abbie is desperate to find a way to prove that she can manage the lighthouse so she can keep Gramps on the island, all the while dreading the day she would have to reveal the truth to Nathaniel. Some of the twists kept me guessing how the story would end, but don't worry, this amazing series dedicated to female lighthouse keepers ends with a happily ever after in its final book. (I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)

The last in the Beacons of Hope series is no disappointment! Jody Hedlund researches her setting and topic to the point that I could imagine myself on Rose Island. A stand alone novel, I highly recommend that you read all the books in this series. Never Forget is so touching, filled with faith, and the passion between Nathaniel and Abbie is breathtaking! I loved both of these characters. Their struggles are palpable. Abbie's Gramps struggles with senility and fear of losing his position at the Rose Island lighthouse, and Abbie fears this constant threat. She is willing to do anything to keep their post, including lying about a man who isn't her husband. I love the coast of the Atlantic ocean along the northern coastal states, and the coastal regions of the great lakes. Jody has based this series on some of the most historic lighthouses along the shores of numerous locations. I'm impressed with her descriptive elements of both the locale and the characters. I'm impressed with all of Ms Hedlund's books, and this one is a winner! Don't miss out on a beautifully penned novel that will warm your heart! Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book with no expectations for a positive review. All expressed opinions are my own.

I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the books in the Beacons of Hope series about keepers of lighthouses in the early years of our country. These men, and women, have lived strong, fearless lives on the brink of disaster as they maintain the lights that keep those on the seas safe. True, these are works of fiction, but they are based on true encounters, events, and personages. In Never Forget the storm lashed yacht of wealthy Nathaniel Winthrop is in a perilous situation and Nathaniel is washed overboard while struggling to keep it afloat. He is found unconscious by Abbie, the young lady who helps her aged and dementia afflicted grandpa take care of the lighthouse. She takes him back to the cottage and nurses him back to consciousness though his memory is gone because of a blow to his head. What follows is a sweet tale where Abbie tries to manage the lighthouse and her grandpa's condition and keep the superintendent of lighthouses from firing them from their position. The characters have situations and past decisions in their lives that really clutter their ability to move forward but they find that regardless of their past actions, there is hope in Christ and new beginnings. The title is apt given the sweet grandpa's dementia and how it affects those around him and also the amnesia Nathaniel endures from his accident. But it is also true that we should never forget the hope that awaits us in Christ. DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy to facilitate a review which is freely given and strictly my own opinion.

A Complex Dilemma While I haven’t read all of the previous novels in the series, I eagerly picked up Jody Hedlund’s Never Forget. The premise intrigued me and I quickly became immersed in the story and invested in how things would turn out. Abbie is a complex character who I initially had trouble understanding. Her love for her grandfather is obvious, as is her dedication to doing what she has to in order to keep him on the island, the environment in which he is most comfortable. But why doesn’t she just tell the truth? As the story progressed, I found that I could actually relate to the myriad reasons for why she did allow the misunderstanding to continue, and I found myself questioning what I would have done in her situation. What if I had put myself in a similar predicament? The scenes with Gramps broke my heart several times; to love someone whose mind has betrayed them, to watch as they are confused, living in the past, mistaking you for someone you’re not is excruciating. The constant fear of what could happen is exhausting. The scenes are well-written and help readers better understand what families may experience when dealing with a loved one afflicted with memory issues. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy historical fiction, especially romance fans and those who have an interest in historical lighthouses as there is much information on them within these pages. It has enough mystery to keep things moving along and several small twists toward the end that changed how I thought the book was going to end, several times over. Although it is the fifth and final book in the Beacons of Hope series, it can easily be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel. I received a free copy of this book from the author through Celebrate Lit but no compensation for this review. I was not required to write a favorable one and the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

I've read all five lighthouse books by Jody Hedlund and I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite, but Never Forget would definitely be right up there at the top! I've been fascinated with the time period and the work the lighthouse keepers had to do to keep their positions. Women were technically not allowed to be a keeper but the author brought out some very strong women in this series that showed they were certainly capable. She also uses real people from the past as examples for the characters. And I love that these novels are historically accurate. Lots of research goes into each one I'm sure. I was inspired from these novels to actually visit an old lighthouse on my vacation last summer. The character Abbie, is a strong women who keeps the light running each night in spite of her drunken, rarely present husband and her grandfather who has memory problems. She fights to keep her grandfather on the island where the lighthouse is located and where they live. She fears removing him after all these years will keep him going in a downward spiral. When a stranger washes up on their beach half drowned and with a head injury, and has no memory of who he is, he starts believing that he's Abbie's husband. She wonders if this is the answer to her prayers for her grandfather. But is deception truly right? She struggles with this and finds there are consequences eventually. Interestingly, the cover model is the author's daughter and I think it is very eye catching. Although this is the fifth book in the series, it can be read as a standalone, but why would anyone want to miss all the good reading in the previous ones? I'm sad knowing this is the last lighthouse book, but I can always go back and re-read them all, I received this book from the author/publisher and was not required to write a review, positive or otherwise.

Never Forget by Jody Hedlund is book number five in the Beacons of Hope series. This is the best piece of historical fiction yet by Jody Hedlund! This story captivated me from the very beginning. I felt as though I was enduring all that life dealt right along with Abbie Watson. My heart ached so for Abbie and her Gramps and what they had endured. Just when you thought you had the story figured out something unexpected would happen and change the course of the story. I am so looking forward to reading more books by Jody Hedlund. Be sure to grab a glass of sweet tea and kick back while you enjoy Never Forget. I received a complementary copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion. 5 stars!

A richly detailed and superbly characterized historical romance, Never Forget offers nothing less than a captivating and swoon-worthy read. Deceitful lies, undeniable chemistry, ultimate redemption—it’s emotionally gripping and full of twists and turns. As I delved into the story of desperate yet determined Abbie Watson and injured yet maturing Nathaniel Winthrop III, I simply wanted to read more and more, and when I reached the wholly satisfying end, I couldn’t help but smile about the experience. It captured my heart and imagination, and I loved it. And as Never Forget concludes Jody Hedlund’s Beacons of Hope novels, I can’t neglect to compliment the series as a whole. Linked together by not only the lighthouse setting, but also the spiritual truths represented by a traveling wooden cross, these novels delight with heartwarming and uplifting stories, and any lover of historical romance should not leave them unread. I highly recommend Never Forget and the rest of the Beacons of Hope series. Thanks to Celebrate Lit, I received a copy of Never Forget and the opportunity to provide an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review, and all the opinions I have expressed are my own.

Never Forget by Jody Hedlund is the fifth installment of the “Beacons of Hope” series, which I dearly hope that there will be more of, even though the author says this is the last book in the series. Each book works as a stand alone, and they get better as the series goes on, which I’ve found to be unusual. Abbie Watson takes care of the lighthouse and her aging grandfather since her husband left her. She has since found his pocket watch on a man washed ashore after a shipwreck, and if the knowledge of her husband’s passing became widespread, she could lose her position. Thus, she keeps the news hidden…but when a man who doesn’t remember where he came from turns up after a terrible storm, Abbie takes him in. From overhearing conversations as he is recovering, the man assumes he is Abbie’s husband. As mentioned in the first paragraph, I loved this book. It had a unique plot and lovable characters, and I was instantly hooked. There were many twists and turns that I never saw coming. Thanks to the author for providing me with an electronic copy of this book to read and review. This has been one of my go to series. I love that they have all been set in a lighthouse and this book did not disappoint me. This is the last book in this series and I was sad to see it end. I will say you can read these as a stand alone but they are better if read in order. The author has a way of making you really feel the emotions of the characters and that you are a part of the book. She also does a good job in describing the setting of the story as well as the emotions of the characters. I think it was great that Abbie was trying to do what she could to help her grandpa out so he could stay where he is comfortable. Then you have Nathaniel who end up in a place he does not know where it is nor how he got there. But as things move along they both grow closer together. I thought this was a fitting end to this series.

4.5 Stars I really enjoyed this book. This is the first book that I have read by the author - and I really enjoyed it. Since I had not read any other books in the Beacons of Hope Series, I was able to follow along without any confusion. Jody has created these characters and you can feel them as you read. This book has a really good story line. Abbie and Nathaniel's story will take you on the emotional ride of a lifetime. I found myself turning page after page quickly to continue the stories. You see that desperate times call for desperate measures. This book is a great historical romance. I am going to have to go back and read the whole series.

I really enjoyed reading of this young women's days on the Island taking care of her father and the Lighthouse. She is a strong young lady and has stepped up and taken on responsibilities and does what has to be done.. From her senile Grandfather, a young man with no memory and a determined bad man who wants her job, this is a good story of faith, determination, love and strength..

This was a fantastic ending to a wonderful series. This was a great historical romance. I loved to learn about the different light houses on each island. Abbie and Nathaniel were great characters. I had a little trouble with Gramps but that was only because I have gone through Alzheimer's with a family member. It is definitely not easy. I look forward to whatever Jody Hedlund decides to write next. I received an ebook copy from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion.

Never Forget, the fifth and final book in the Beacons of Hope series, is another beautifully romantic story by Jody Hedlund. Through their mistakes and mishaps, their bright moments and triumphs, these characters are utterly endearing. Abbie is determined to help her grandfather keep his place as the light keeper and will do anything to make this happen. When a man washes up in a wreck on their shores and can’t remember a thing, though she knows it’s not the right thing to do, she uses the situation to help her grandfather. Of course, this doesn’t go quite the way she planned, because the stranger is kind, handsome and willing to do anything to help both Abbie and her grandfather. The journey that ensues is one of tense scenes, tender moments and uplifting affirmations of faith. I’ve so loved the settings of each of these books. I feel like I have a good understanding of all of the chores and day-to-day tasks that keep a lighthouse running. I found all of those details fascinating, and in this story, it was especially endearing how Abbie knows all about the serious maintenance of a lighthouse, but still maintained a sweet concern about her chickens. I love that Hedlund bases certain details on historical fact – make sure to read the Author’s Note because of the extra tidbits that make the reading experience more memorable. The plot is engaging. I never felt it was moving too fast or too slow for the story. Truth be told, I couldn't put it down and read it in less than two days, which is pretty fast for me! Hedlund touches on some tough subjects with a deft hand, especially dementia, addictions and keeping secrets. As always, everything is tasteful yet realistic. The pain of the characters is tangible, yet nothing is gratuitous or overly dramatic. As with any Hedlund novel, I must mention that loveliness that is the relationship between Abbie and Nathaniel. The ups and downs, hurts and tender moments all feel realistic and happen in a timely manner – talk about some amazing chemistry. And though I never questioned the happily-ever-after, there were moments that I was unsure just how this was all going to play out, and I love being surprised that way. I’m sad to see the end of this series, but feel so happy that there were five full stories to enjoy. Never Forget and the rest of the series are certainly books that I will read again. If you enjoy stories with swoon-worthy romantic elements and realistic historical details, I highly recommend the Beacons of Hope series. I received a complimentary copy of this novel, which I chose to review. This review is my honest opinion.

This is such a sweet and heart warming story that I believe anyone will fall in love with. It had enough twists and turns to keep me from figuring out what would happen, although I tried my best! I loved how vividly the author described not only the characters but also the scenes. Abbie was stronger than I expected her to be. Sometimes the heroines in romantic tales are weak and depend on a man to get her through but not Abbie. Don't get me wrong, she felt something for Nathaniel but she was strong on her on with or without a man. She's someone I felt like if I had known her in real life we'd have been friends and spent our days tending to the light house and playing with her menagerie of pets. I do hope you'll give Never Forget a try, you won't regret it! *I was provided a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.

Jody Hedlund is one of my favorite historical romance writers. I especially enjoy her writing because a lot of her books are set in Michigan (my favorite state) so I wasn’t sure about this one, but she proved it doesn’t matter the setting, Jody is a wonderful author no matter where the story take place. This book opens with a scene that easily places you in the trouble Abbie is in and we quickly develop sympathy for her. I adore Gramps and she handles him with love. The we meet Nathaniel. It’s easy to see that prior to him losing his memory he wasn’t a very nice guy. Jody developed the misunderstanding of Abbie and Nathaniel’s “marriage” very well. Next thing you know Abbie finds herself in a bind and doesn’t know what to do. So many layers, misunderstandings, and questions of what will happen when everything comes to light. This is a great book that will keep you turning page after page until you reach the end. A copy of this book was given to me through The Celebrate Lit Team. All opinions are my own.

This is an incredible historical romance! I absolutely love the depth of the main characters in this wonderful book. They are both so flawed and very believable. Abbie’s actions and decisions through much of the book are so mixed up and just plain wrong. But I was amazed by her intentions and the love for her grandfather that drove them. Nathaniel is struggling with his own demons but his desire to live a better life is strong. The development of the story is great. I was sucked in quickly and rooting both Abbie and Nathaniel along. I wanted desperately to see them both grow and develop integrity in their interactions. I have to admit that a large part of me wanted to see the romance between them work out. They had huge obstacles to overcome for it to happen. I love seeing how the cross of hope that was crafted in the first story in the series keeps appearing. It is a fantastic reminder of the beacon of hope that is the cross of Christ. I received a free eBook copy of this story from the author. This was my first time to read a book by Jody Hedlund. I found Never Forget to be a book I didn't want to put down and was sad when it came to an end. Every time I crack open the pages of one of Jody's books I am left in awe. Her books consistently posses quality story and the characters reach out and grab my heart and emotions. Abbie and Nathaniel's story will take you on the emotional ride of a lifetime. There were so many possible outcomes that I was furiously reading the last few chapters to see what happened. No matter the ending, the message of the story shines brightly and is unavoidable; In Christ, we CAN become new. His love and forgiveness can wipe away the past and we can start fresh. However, it is so much harder to turn away from the past under our own strength. That being said...No, I am not telling you how the book ends. I will tell you I screamed aloud several times, laughed, cried, and giggled like a schoolgirl before I finished. One thing that I simply adore about Jody Hedlund, (I am sure I have said this before) is that she doesn't shy away from the truth. The Bible, Christ, faith, conviction, and redemption are all strong aspects of her writing. Her words move me and touch my heart in such a precious and powerful way. Even her "Author's Note" contains the power of Christ. "He is always there offering you His hope, love, and forgiveness. Please, never forget all that He offers." - Jody Hedlund Beacons of Hope has earned a position as one of my forever favorites. I am so sad to see its conclusion, yet Never Forget brings the series to a satisfying end. Following the Cross of Hope we discover so many lighthouses and learn about the REAL women who worked them. The journey has been rewarding, educational, and inspirational. I HIGHLY recommend these books! Each of the books can stand alone, however, reading them from the beginning will give you the full experience. When all is said and done, I pray that the message of HOPE speaks to your heart as it did to mine. I received a complimentary copy of Never Forget. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

There’s so much more to this book than kisses, but my goodness there are some fabulous kisses too! Like… the kind of kisses that make you forget how to breathe. The kind of kisses that make you worry slightly that your toes will be permanently curled by the end of the book (totally worth it though). The kind of kisses that you go back and read again immediately after finishing them…. and then maybe once more (at least) for good measure. Wowzah. Ok… so … i did say there was more to Never Forget than kisses, didn’t I? There is the richness of the historical setting and the depth of each character, both particular skills of Hedlund’s. From the dichotomy of Abbie’s grit and vulnerability to Nathaniel’s battle to live with integrity to Gramps’ meanderings in and out of dementia… these vivid characters evoke deep emotions from the readers and take up residence in the heart. These are characters I’ll be thinking about for a while. Some gut-punching twists and turns will keep you on your toes (the ones that are permanently curled from those kisses!), but at every new bend in the path there is the steady truth that pulses throughout Never Forget – that no matter what your past, you can be a new creation in Jesus. Bottom Line: Romantic chemistry off the charts! Kisses sure to melt even the most frozen of pearl-clutchers. A setting which perfectly complements the characters. Characters so dimensional you feel their joys and agonizings and fears and longings as clearly as if they were your own emotions. Life lessons that will linger, thanks to the beauty of the story. While I hate to see this series end, Never Forget is such a fitting finale and is without a doubt my new favorite of the bunch! (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)

*happy sigh* Oh what a gloriously wonderful book this was! To be honest, it's been a long while since I devoured a book as quickly as I did this one. I read the first quarter one morning and then the next I finished it in practically one sitting. I was so wrapped up in Abbie and Nathaniel's lives that I couldn't bear to leave. I didn't have a high opinion of Nathaniel after the previous book but he redeemed himself and more in this one. At the start, he'd actually gotten worse than when we last saw him, but a knock to the head gives him a clean slate. I loved the way he handled the second chance he was given! He didn't remember who he was but he knew he hadn't been living right and instead of just accepting that was who he was he determined to never be that man again. He turned to God and started being a better man. Honestly his words and actions had me melting into a puddle! Abbie has been abandoned by people close to her more than once and as a result is a bit guarded. She has a fierce devotion to her grandpa and she works as hard as she can and makes whatever sacrifices necessary to help him, all without a word of complaint. They were an entertaining couple, with Nathaniel convinced he'd been a horrible husband and trying to prove he'd changed, and Abbie knowing it was all fake, doing her best to distance herself, yet falling for him anyway. There was obstacle after obstacle thrown into the path of their relationship. But they somehow made it through each one to an ending that left me sighing with happiness! I could go on and on about this book but I'll let you discover the rest on your own, trust me, you won't be sorry! Meet the Author Winner of 2016 Christian Book Award for fiction and Christy Award for historical romance, best-selling author Jody Hedlund writes inspirational historical romances for both youth and adults. Jody lives in central Michigan with her husband, five busy children, and five spoiled cats. Although Jody prefers to experience daring and dangerous adventures through her characters rather than in real life, she’s learned that a calm existence is simply not meant to be (at least in this phase of her life!). I LOVED this story! It is the fifth book in the Beacons of Hope series by Jody Hedlund. Abbie Watson is trying to do everything she can to keep her and her grandfather at Rose Island Lighthouse in Rhode Island because it helps with the confusion that her grandfather lives with every day. She married a man that she didn't love in order to stay on the island, but he disappeared and is thought to be dead so now their living situation is precarious. Finding the young man on the beach nearly drowned and without his memory seems to be the answer to her prayers, but soon her feelings change for him and she knows she must tell him the truth before he finds out on his own. Nathaniel Winthrop III life is only filled with sleeping in, partying late and spending time with women and men who he has no business to be with, but he has found dealing with his father's death extremely difficult and can't seem to get past it. Once realizing who he is he could go on living on the island, but his anger with Abbie for not telling him and his guilt for keeping his well being from his family forces him to leave the island even while knowing that he will love Abbie for the rest of his life. I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Never Forget is author Jody Hedlund’s fifth book in the Beacon of Hope series yet can be read as a standalone. This talented author wove a historical tale as only she can weave. One of (clean) romance, hardships, suspense, faith and hope. As true with any of Hedlund’s novels, the character’s traits – good and bad – are relatable to the reader. In Never Forget, there is a level of desperation that makes Abbie do questionable things because of the love she has for her Grandfather. Yet, even though it is for her Grandfather, does that make it okay? Can forgiveness be extended and hope prevail? Never Forget is definitely a page turner and will have you thinking for days. I highly recommend Never Forget (and all of Hedlund’s novels!). **I was given this book from the author for an honest review.

In the final installment, author Jody Hedlund, rounds out this series with beautifully crafted characters and a story of grace and love. When Abigal, "Abbie", Watson is forced by desperation to lie in order to save her Grandfather, she gets herself into more trouble than she accounted for. In this time period in 1880, it was still frowned upon for women to be lighthouse keepers. Abbie's grandfather, Hosea, is the light keeper for the Rose Island lighthouse, in Rhode Island. The problem is he is losing his memory as age creeps up on him. As Hosea and his now departed wife raised Abbie and her sister, Debbie; Abbie feels she owes him everything to make the rest of his life as comfortable as possible. She is willing to do anything so they remain at the lighthouse where he has his routine to keep him stable. She married a man she didn't love in hopes the lighthouse superintendent would make him assistant keeper. Her husband Nate was drunk even on their wedding day. It didn't matter to Abbie as she did most of the keeper duties anyway. Then one day Nate didn't return. After several months his absence was noticed by a competing lighthouse keeper across the way at the Goat Island lighthouse. Zeke Crawford didn't tend the lighthouse as well as he could, instead he spent his time digging for lost pirate treasure. The real reason he wanted the Rose Island position was to dig for the treasure Captain Kidd supposedly buried on the island. Later that day Nathaniel Winthrop III was entertaining on his yacht. Fans of Jody Hedlund will remember Nathaniel as the former fiancé to Victoria Cole from Forever Safe book #4. He and his friends were heavily drinking when a storm sprung upon them. Nathaniel was thrown overboard after being hit on the head by a swinging piece of the mast. The next day Abbie found him washed up on the shore of Rose Island. She dragged him back to the lighthouse where Hosea helped her take him inside. Nathaniel suffered from amnesia and when he assumed he was Abbie's drunken husband Nate, she didn't correct him. The Superintendent paid them a visit after Zeke complained. Nathaniel's presence solved the immediate problem of the missing assistant keeper if no one looked too closely that he didn't resemble the real Nate. Lies compound and Abbie finds herself buried in them, as she even has to lie to Hosea to keep him from senile agitation. Nathaniel goes along with the " stories" to keep Hosea sound. Abbie then notices that having Nathaniel around improves Hosea's state of mind. She is reluctant to tell Nathaniel the truth if it means she might lose her grandfather to the memories of the past again. Of course lies have a way of revealing themselves and brains have a way of healing lost memories when you least expect them. Love can find a way to heal the sins of the past, but can it heal the sins of the present? Can forgiveness pave a way for love in the future especially as betrayals are revealed? With hope it just might be possible. Jody Hedlund ends the Beacons of Hope series with this wonderful tale of desperate love, self forgiveness, selflessness and sacrifice. It is a must read to see how the ship-wreck-driftwood-cross once again heals lives and is a beacon of hope for not only the characters but the readers of this series as well. The Beacons of Hope series -the prequel novella Out of the Storm; the novels #1 Love Unexpected, #2 Hearts Made Whole, #3 Hope Undaunted and #4 Forever Safe.
