Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, and the Birth of Existentialism

Kierkegaard noticed a sickness of despair in Europe. The cure was to live passionately for God. He looked to heroes of the Bible as models who took a leap of faith. Meanwhile, Frederich Nietzsche saw similar issues, but offered a different solution. He declared the death of God. His only answer was to create meaning in a meaningless world. These co-fathers of existentialism set thinkers on two very different paths.
