Night Magic by Emilie Richards

Skeeter Harwood Still Pays for an Old Mistake

Despite the onset of summer, Doctor Fantôme's Sanctuary of Voodoo in the French Quarter sends chills through psychologist Daphne Brookes. This is tourist voodoo, meant to shock and titillate. Daffy is fascinated by the man behind the counter, but less fascinated by the shop. One of her teenage clients may be under the influence of someone there.

Easy-going portrait artist Skeeter Harwood is briefly filling in for the shop's owner. Skeeter is more than the maverick people usually see. The man who sells caricatures on Jackson Square has caught the eye of a gallery owner in New York, and now he can create the art he really wants to–if he's willing to make the leap.

Skeeter must make another leap. He and Daffy have met before, and their latent attraction ignites immediately. Still, before they can move forward, Skeeter has to tell her the truth about his past. And Daffy, who has specialized in short-term relationships, must now face the reason why.

As Daffy and Skeeter delve deeper into the world of voodoo, danger is all around them. They must find a way to stop the exploitation of Daffy's client. But as they do, will they be able to overcome their own difficult pasts to find a future they can share?

A romantic suspense focusing on a New Orleans artist Skeeter, and Daffy, a psychologist. There are obstacles to their HEA as Daffy only does short term relationships and has trouble getting past Skeeter’s past. Skeeter continues to be there for Daffy though she constantly pushes him away. This last book in the Midnight series is set amongst the underworld of New Orleans voodoo as they search for answers to help one of Daffy’s patients. Well-written and I was surprised by who the villain was. A nice conclusion to the series.

Book Three in the romantic suspense series, New Orleans nights presents the story of Dr. Daffy Brookes, therapist and Skeeter Harwood, French Quarter artist. Night Magic includes lots of New Orleans elements - “ dissolving heat wave, coffee, hoodoo and voodoo, mirliton, New Orleans Saints and gumbo. Woven in the action of the story and numerous characters is a real sense of living in New Orleans. Loved the way the story ended especially with regards to Natalie. Lots of wonderful insights and quotes in this one. “Gumbo is a process. Gumbo is a prayer.” “Sometimes bad things happen to good plants” and “Vegetarian…. I’m an anthing-tarian. I’d rather eat than breathe.” An enjoyable read!

Night Magic, so appropriately named, has voodoo, voudou, curses, darkness, and light. I was entranced about the good and evil involved. This book was exciting, scary, and dark at times, but the relationship between artist Skeeter Harwood and psychologist Daffy Brookes brings heart and light to the story. The characters from the previous books add to the friendships between longtime friends, Skeeter, Joshua, and Sam. This is a story that stands on its own, but the backgrounds of each these characters from the other two books make for a full and complete series. A group of teenagers who meet with Daffy are some of the characters in need of help. Highly influential, a lot can impress on the moods of these youngsters, and getting in dangerous unimaginable trouble weighs them down. Daffy has her work cut out for her. With Skeeter’s and psychologist Antoinette’s help, they try to end the evil. Skeeter is in my heart and has been since the beginning of this series. His and Daffy’s relationship has a lot of hurdles to conquer, especially on Daffy’s end. I really enjoyed this book and the whole series. Updating two books and writing the third was ingenious. I now have many new aspects of New Orleans and what lurks behind the scenes.

Night Magic is the third book of the New Orleans Nights series. This book has a backdrop of New Orleans’ mysterious voodoo culture. The intrigue of the traditions of voodoo practices adds to this mystery-romance novel and leaves the reader even more curious about the beliefs associated with this religion. The characterization and transformation of Skeeter, an artist, and one of the three men who formed a childhood bond together; breaks the mold of the rich and handsome guy. Emilie Richards draws the reader in to find out more of what makes this man tick. The characters in this book, Skeeter the artist and Daffy the psychologist, teach us that life’s struggles can make us more accepting of others who don’t grow up in the perfect family situation. This third book of the series leaves the reader wanting more of the interactions of the three guys: the psychologist, the policeman, and the artist who grew up together and how their adult lives and families may become intertwined in the future. Here’s hoping Emilie Richards will extend this series beyond three books, so these characters can remain with us. If you love reading books about New Orleans, mystery, and romance, you will love this book.

This third book in this series is the finalization of a story planned years ago that just now made it to light. It is in the same atmosphere (pre-Katrina New Orleans) as the other two and is also a romantic suspense. The heroine is a therapist that inadvertently gets dragged into the gris-gris bag and vodoo ritual scene by one of her patients. Much of the book deals with this darkness. Skeeter, a street artist who we met in the first two books, finally gets to tell his story. His attraction to Daffy and their sometimes awkward relationship development is the lightness in the book. It was so wonderful to see Skeeter find a love of his own! He is very sweet with Daffy and is bent on protecting her, even when she makes it very difficult. The darkness that surrounds them has to be dealt with and the suspense in the story keeps you turning the pages until the conclusion is met, hearts come together and you can close the book in satisfaction that Skeeter is who he always should have been.

The third book in the New Orleans Nights series is the story about Dr. Daffy Brookes and Skeeter. Skeeter was the boyhood friend of Sam Long and Joshua Martane, the main characters from the first two books. You do not need to read the books in order but after reading this one, you will want to read the others. Dr. Brookes is a psychologist and is working with a group of teenage girls. She had met Skeeter at Sam and Antoinette’s wedding but runs into him in a voodoo shop while she is doing research that she hopes will help her with one of the girls. As the story progresses voodoo plays a very large part. You feel like you are deep in the bayou watching the ceremony with Daffy as she tries to connect all of the things that have been happening while feeling deathly ill.
